My 286 system has no more available drive bays. Right now, it's hard drive sits on some small pieces of paper ontop of it's powersupply. Can anyone give me a better mounting solution or a hard drive pad material that's probably around my house that isn't such a fire hazard?

How's the drive set up? Take a picture of it. If it's got metal rails with screw holes on either side, you can just rest it on those.

The drive is set up like this, over the PSU. Also there are no drive rails.

what about a cd case? some velcro, a mouse pad, plastic from a dvd case, double sided tape, thin bubble wrap, mother board standoffs screwed into the bottom of the drive mounted on a piece of plastc from a cd or dvd then Velcro on. Lots of things you can do be creative. get some scissors and whatnot and cut somthing to fit there. they sell velcro at the dollar store. 🤣

dont obstruct any cooling vents.

Good idea, I think I might try a CD case. Didn't think of that.

Don't worry about that paper. It won't start burning within operating temperature of any of those devices. 😉
But maybe Velcro tape has got a couple of practical advantages over paper.

Those Conner drives can get really hot, so you should mount it in a way that allows clearance of at least 1cm on all sides.

I see lots of room inside the case to put the hard disk, but you would need to build a custom cradle to mount it anywhere there.

I wouldn’t use paper in case something shorts out and creates sparks but Doornkaat is right paper won’t combust until 232C /451F. The easy way to remember this is it’s the title to Ray Bradbury’s iconic novel featuring government mind-washing and book burning - Fahrenheit 451.

This is something I've used in the past - slightly more involved but nice and secure - four of these

placed directly below the side screwholes of the hdd, and four small zipties threaded thru the holes and mounts to secure.

Not sure if that's suitable (fire, shorts, etc), but there used to be HDD noise blockers.
They essentially were a pair of rubber bricks that could be screwed on the HDD at each side.
Depending on their height, the may also function as "feet"/stands.

Slim CD jewel case will do.

That's not a terrible idea, but I dont want to ruin the nice casing/sticker on my PSU.
