Hi guys, I have bought this board for cheap https://computer-retro.de/Bilder/Mainboards/P … miBios-1992.jpg . Because my 386 VLB is giving the error "RTC is not updating system halted" and it doesn't have DALLAS chip is an opti 895 ans SIS chipset

The M396F as a lot of corrosion under the battery that I removed. It has a broken trace that goes from the resistor near the keyboard plug that I already fixed.
I use a cheap chinese 4 digit diag card and it stops at 13.12, going to http://www.bioscentral.com/postcodes/amibios.htm it doesnt have the 13 code for motherboards after 1990, but before 1990 the error says "System-interrupt vectors initialized". The states are sequential? like after 13 comes 14 "8042 keyboard controller checks OK"? Could it be the keyboard controller bad? I already dessoldered the keyboard socket because it has green pins and need to buy another one to replace.
Can someone point me a way to repair this mobo? Mine is like in the photo but more corroded under the batt. And I cant see what traces are gone.
Thanks,
Jorge

Here's mine :

Clean your KBC and swapping the socket is a good idea indeed

Thank you for the photo! it looks that nothing special is going "under" the battery, no traces for anywhere... Good tip, replace the connector, I have one spare here, will do it now

Also try to pour some vinegar to neutralise the battery's leftovers it can help sometimes (my board worked when I was trying it first, then the keyboard didn't work and then it didn't work at all anymore. After cleaning it, everything was back)

Hi! I have done that, a good vinegar bath (I have only 6% vinegar but I saw on YT some guys using 24% vinegar, but I cant find it in Portugal). Waited about 30 minutes, toothbrush to scrub, IPA bath, soap water bath to clean, hairdryer over the board and now I am waiting 1 or 2 days until it dries out completely. Meanwile, I need to buy a 40 pin socket for the KB controller. Strange is the error that I was having before dessoldered the KB socket, the code 13... I dont know how to solve it. I hope that a new socktet will do the job

Well if the socket doesn't do the trick, check the traces connecting the kbc to the motherboard.

Hi Jorge,

i have exactly the same board. Mine is also badly damaged. That's why I decided to rebuild it. The first revision is already running quite well. But it still needs to be tested. If everything works you can repair your board with it.

Rev 2 is ready and booting. Now test it thoroughly.

Absolutely incredible!!!
Out of curiosity, why did you do a revision 2? Was there anything not working properly with the previous one?

For anyone interested, I sent https://github.com/Marco-Both/M396F-Replika to the fab, and got 10 back. One for myself. If all is well, 9 will be available to dispatch. I want to build one to make sure all is well before I send the boards into the wild. There are parts available from the BOM for 10 builds, and I've received the parts and all look well. PCB's have ENIG and not HASL for surface treatment.

Only parts I'm trying to get at a good deal are the 30 pin dual rank SIMM sockets. I'm thinking of ordering these https://www.peconnectors.com/sockets-pga-cpu- … memory/hws9594/

You feel a whole lot more like you do now than you did when you used to.

I put the Gerberfiles into the Git reposotory.

Fantastic! Would it be possible to also generate a boardview file? If you used Kicad this supposedly should work https://github.com/whitequark/kicad-boardview
Boardview files can be opened with for example http://boardviewer.net https://github.com/OpenBoardView/OpenBoardView and help with troubleshooting, not to mention they are a great educational tool. Did you happen to also make a diagram?
Afaik this is the second new/old 386 motherboard that can be build today, with https://alexandrugroza.ro/microelectronics/sy … sbmc/index.html being the other one.
