Live! and Audigy 1 panels - interchangeable.
Audigy 2 - only Audigy 2 series. EDIT: Compatible with X-Fi panel too.
X-Fi - PCI and PCI-E card panels are incompatible between each other.
What do they do in simple terms ?
Remote control, sound volume control, audio inputs and outputs, firewire port.
Do they have any real use ?
For gaming? Headphones jack and volume control. Playing songs via player remotely. Maybe SPDIF output, if you need to record your footage from another computer.
