Hi,
As a quaratine project, I am building a Super Socket 7-computer and I am a bit torn on certain parts.
I have a PC-Chips M577, which I am planning to BIOS flash from here http://web.inter.nl.net/hcc/J.Steunebrink/k6plus.htm
My current CPU is a 6x86MX at 266mhz, however I was thinking about getting a P55C or a K6-2 for the build. My first 486 was a Cyrix DX2-66, so I have a place in my heart for Cyrix, but I thought it would be fun to upgrade. To somewhat experience a generation at its peak.
There’s 384mb of RAM on the board by the way.
However I am a bit conflicted with regards to what path to take. I would like it to be both a DOS and a Win98 machine, but maybe with a bit more focus on DOS. I have a 2xP3-667mhz for 98 and XP-gaming, with a Voodoo2-sli and geforce fx5900 ultra (to avoid GPU bottlenecks).
So this machine is more for DOS but also the occasional Win98 game. I am thinking playing games from the mid-nineties (System Shock, Dark Forces, Wing Commandedr, car games, adventure games) and C&C, Red Alert SVGA in Windows, Blade Runner, Unreal and Deus Ex. Would Half-Life, Quake 2 be possible?
So is it Voodoo3, TNT2/TNT2 Ultra, an S3 Virge 2000? I have a Rage 2c, but it seems to be a slow option? For me, I build my systems from the CPU, to experience the CPU at its max, so I do not want the GPU to be the limiting factor. I would however like this to be more period correct than my P3-buiild. What would you guys recommend?
For a soundcard I was thinking either a SoundBlaster 16, AWE32 ISA or maybe a Yamaha YMF724 since I read it had good DOS support for a PCI-card. What do you guys think?
Oh and lastly, do you know a good resource for parts and peripherals? The board came without any serial port brackets, PS/2 etc., and I don’t want to cannibalize another build. Also where to get a decent mouse/keyvboard combo?
Thank you for your help!
