Enjoying some free time i decided to rebuild an old PC i have to play some classic games.
But no matter what i do i can't make it work reliably.

These are the (current) specs:

AMD Atlhon XP 1700+ Thoroughbred-B @ 2ghz (100 x 20) @ 1.75v
Asus A7V133 (Via KT133A/686B) Rev 1.05 (NO DOT)
Voodoo 3 3000 PCI 16mb
Creative Sound Blaster Ensoniq AudioPCI (CT4810)
384mb PC133 (two sticks 256 + 128) @ 133mhz CAS 3
Samsung 40gb 7200RPM IDE

I have installed Windows XP SP3 to test a few things first, but everything i do causes random CRC errors when decompressing archives or installing games / software or whatever.
Btw, during XP installation several files gave errors during copy, but when i hit retry it "worked" and moved on.

My first tought was that the memory or cpu was having issues, so i ran MEMTEST86+ through Hiren´s Boot CD and it passed without errors. Next i tried prime95 in both small and blend tests, and it ran fine for about an hour or so ( i didn´t tried for longer).

Then i tried different bioses/settings (tried 1009, 1010 beta and 1010 beta from braziliantech), swapped the power supply, and different IDE controller and drivers (tried the via controller and promise controller afterwards).
Tried an AGP card alone (VANTA LT) without any other PCI cards, but no luck... Same issues!
I even tried removing / changing memory sticks (tried with the 128mb stick only, in different slots), changing the fsb/multiplier settings (133x11 = 1.46ghz) and nothing worked.
At 133mhz FSB it is even worse, it gives memory errors in MEMTEST86, so i reverted back to 100mhz FSB.

I´m out of ideas... Could it be an motherboard issue?? Looking through old posts i found that the KT133A + 686B had an IDE corruption issue, that seens to have been fixed in newer drivers/bioses, but im not sure its the same issue here.

Have you tried a different hard drive ?

I have a Seagate Barracuda 80 GB 7200.7 SATA hard drive. I tried installing XP in it, using an SATA -> IDE adapter i have, and during the copy files phase i also got random copying errors (that passed after retrying).
I didnt complete the windows installation in it, i aborted it.

My guess would be that something is off with the motherboard (possibly bad capacitors?) .

Have you tried the Via 4-in-1 drivers ?

I´m using 4-in-1 version 4.43.

Capacitors could probably gone bad, since i have this board for almost 20 years and never had any repair done to it.
But i never heard of a similar issue caused by capacitors, is this common?

Humm, i should probably check the caps then.

I also noticed that my Atlhon XP is chipped around the corners, could this be an issue also?

Edit: Man, it shows I didn't carefully ready the OP. Still, regarding the corruptiin issue: Did you try a second install after putting the HDD on a different controller?

Old post:
Are you aware of the KT133A / 82C686B bug?
Under certain circumstances (but in my experience also randomly) this bug causes data corruption when transferring data from one integrated IDE channel to the other. There were fixes issued in BIOS and drivers but I would still randomly get file corruption when transfering data from my CD/DVD drive (IDE1 master) to my HDD (IDE2 master).
The only successful workaround was to hook the HDD up to an external controller. (I also disabled IDE2 in BIOS but I don't think that's required.) If your A7V133 has got the integrated Promise IDE controller of course that is fine as well. With the HDD hooked up to the external controller format the drive and do a fresh installation.

Hope this helps! 👍

You already tried to test the memory, good idea.
Such strange effects normally is always the memory. So OK MEMTEST86+ ran fine .... or not?

The CPU is supposed to run on 133MHz and the RAM is supposed to run on 133MHz, so something is fishy with your cpu, mainboard or ram.
As I already said, always the RAM 😁

Can you try without overclocking? That CPU is supposed to run on 1466MHz
You have stability problems and overclock by more than 500MHz, come on.

The multiplier is locked on that CPU, so it can't be running at 20x ( http://www.cpu-world.com/CPUs/K7/AMD-Athlon%2 … A1700DLT3C.html ), unless I am looking at the wrong CPU, or the multiplier has somehow been unlocked .

Let me clear a few questions first:

- The processor is UNLOCKED. The first batches of TBRED-B´s got unlocked multipliers, this one is the case. I also have a Barton 2500+, that is LOCKED.
- I´m using two sticks of PC133 RAM, a 256mb and a 128mb one (but also tried with just one stick, as stated with no success).
- Yes, at 100mhz FSB (and 133 memory) the MEMTEST86+ pass without errors, so did prime95 for an hour.
- Yes, i tested without any overcloking first. I was running 133x11 (1463mhz), but at 133 FSB i cannot pass memtest86. So i dropped the fsb to 100 and set the multiplier to 20x to try to compensate for the lower FSB.
- I pinmodded the cpu socket to get the higher multiplers (without it i´m stuck to 12,5x). With the pinmod i can go 20x and beyond.
- I know 500mhz is "a lot", but 2ghz is fairly standard for T-Bred B´s.

One thing i didn´t try, is that i have a PCI sata / usb 2 combo controller (VIA VT6214L / VIA VT6421A). Is it possible to install the OS and boot if i use a SATA hd in this controller?

OK, fine.
1)
So both of your RAM sticks are not compatible with your mainboard.
If I were you, I would try to get a stick that works with 133MHz.

2) The problem you reported (CRC errors), you had with a 533MHz overclock. So what about running the CPU in 14*100MHz (66MHz underclock) and try again?
You should always have a stable system, before starting overclocking. Otherwise it's hard to identify the problem.
So I would NOT start to exchange the IDE controllers or whatever, test the system with the onboard IDE controller and check if these CRC errors are gone.
Maybe you still have problems, because of the faulty RAM?

EDIT:
OK, sorry you wrote FSB 100, but RAM 133. So might be still RAM related, because FSB 133/RAM 133 with default multiplier 11 gave RAM errors.
Did you have that "CRC" errors with CPU default values, too?

No overclocking on this one, the CPU is not overclockable as you had discovered when you wind back, works correctly still, do not overclock or use odd combinations. Keep it to stock clock, yours is fsb of 133 for a athlon 1700+ is 11x 133 = 1466MHz.

If you want 2GHz, buy Athlon XP 2400+ AXDA2400DUV3C.

Assuming you have this CPU stick with a multiplier of 11. If 11x133 gives you instability, go with 11x100.

Also, check your memory timings and reset them to the default values in case they are turned up too much.

PC#1: Pentium MMX 166 / Soyo SY-5BT / S3 Trio64V+ / Voodoo1 / YMF719 / AWE64 Gold / SC-155
PC#2: AthlonXP 2100+ / ECS K7VTA3 / Voodoo3 / Audigy2 / Vortex2
PC#3: Athlon64 3400+ / Asus K8V-MX / 5900XT / Audigy2
PC#4: i5-3570K / MSI Z77A-G43 / GTX 970 / X-Fi

No, poster noted this is Athlon XP 1700+ Thoroughbred which is a 1.466 Ghz CPU and wouldn't overclock too well as poster didn't understand the implications so we pointed this out.

Go and buy a Athlon 2400+ Thoroughbred CPU.

Cheers,

I havent discovered that... 🤣... It doesnt work also at stock speeds (133x11=1.46ghz). It is even worse in fact, because at 133 FSB i cant pass memtest.

My timings are loose (3-3-3) .
I haven´t tried 11x100 (underclock), i might give it a try.
