I'm looking for something akin to the Asrock 775i65G -> Win9x compatible, 3 PCI slots, IDE & Floppy, but with a PCIe instead of an AGP slot. I don't intend to use the PCIe with Win9x, just fyi.
The board should accept Core based processors. And one further qualification in terms of board layout, I want the PCIe x16 slot at the same spot where the AGP is on the 775i65G (right next to the motherboard i/o, at the position where you would normally find the slot on ITX boards). Preferably µATX, but ATX is fine as well.
Appreciate your help! 🙂

I think you should check this thread https://msfn.org/board/topic/97588-modern-mot … ussion/page/31/
Just read it from end to beginning 😀 There are unofficial drivers for i945 chipset for Windows 9x.

1) VLSI SCAMP /286@20 /4M /CL-GD5422 /CMI8330
2) i420EX /486DX33 /16M /TGUI9440 /GUS+ALS100+MT32PI
3) i430FX /K6-2@400 /64M /Rage Pro PCI /ES1370+YMF718

Biostar P4M900-M7. Top PCIe slot, Core 2 Duo compatible, Windows 98 chipset drivers. Not the best example out there, but it's an alternative with a VIA chipset.

Good suggestion, but ideally I'm looking for a board with 3 PCI slots. So far I only found one:
ECS EliteGroup RC410-M, revision 1.1 up to 2.0 have the layout I'm looking for, but I don't thing there are any chipset drivers for Win98. I want a working parallel & ethernet port at least.

Hmm, I've read something about unofficial drivers up to 975X / ICH7 in this very forum, but came up empty in my searches on the web. Do you happen to know anything about where I would find those?

Re: Win98SE When is the hardware overkill?
Re: Should I build a "one rig to rule them all"? ("Intel 975X based system - last ICH7 motherboard series with true IDE, FDD and unofficial Win9x drivers")

If possible I would like to make either an Asus P5WDG2 WS Professional (975X, ICH7) or Supermicro C2SBX (x38, ICH9) work in Win98. From what I've read on msfn, AMI bios won't work in my favor though.

over at hwbot a few years back there was a competition where the requirement was to run 98 on newer hardware. I recall seeing system way newer then 975x being used on 9x, even X58 system running 98. It might be wroth digging on there forums for info.

ASRock 4CoreDX90-VSTA, another P4M900 chipset board, 3 PCI slots, Core 2 Duo compatible, Micro ATX, PCIe first slot. Drivers on their site don't officially support Win9x, but P4M900 should have Win9x drivers somewhere on the internet.

This is not exactly what you are asking for, the Gigabyte GA-G31M-ES2L motherboard only has (1) x PCI Express x16 slot, (1) x PCI Express x1 slot, and (2) x PCI slots but I was able to install Windows 98SE on a Gigabyte GA-G31M-ES2L motherboard, I installed a "XFX NVIDIA GeForce 7200 GS 256MB PCI Express video card" using the hacked "Geforce 6-7 and 8 AGP-PCI-E Driver", I also tried a "MSI ATI Radeon X600 Pro 128MB Video Card" that worked just fine with the correct drivers , I used one of the cheap SB0100 "Sound Blaster Live!" cards that are all over eBay that always seem to need some hard to find driver, and yes it took a long time to find a working driver, and BTW that working driver I used earlier failed to work on a another cheap SB0100 "Sound Blaster Live!" that was exactly the same "physically", and I had to hunt for a different driver to make it work, I seem to remember that I also used some "Hacked - Intel INF drivers", and a cheap USB PCI card with a NEC D720101F1 chipset because it has drivers for Windows 98SE, basically you go into the motherboards BIOS and disable everything you can and replace what you disabled with hardware that works with Windows 98, I disabled SATA because this motherboard had IDE, I disabled this motherboard's sound and used a sound card that worked with Windows 98, I disabled this motherboard's USB and used a PCI USB card that had drivers for Windows 98, and used a video card that worked with Windows 98, and disabled everything else that I could in the BIOS, BTW on most LGA775 motherboards you will never get sound under DOS because the chipset will not allow for it, I was so put off by not getting sound under DOS that I ended up putting Windows XP on this computer, and using a different computer for DOS.

Excellent suggestion, thanks a lot! That's exactly the sort of board I've been looking for!
