I'm trying to find a decent cooler for a q6600 online that's pretty quiet, all I can find from decent brands is the Arctic Freezer 7X and Cooler Master's Hyper 103. Has anyone tried these on LGA775, as I've looked on Arctic's website and can only find mounting hardware pertaining to 115x sockets even though they clearly list 775 as being supported. I don't want to end up in PixelPipes' scenario and buy a mislabelled cooler that doesn't fit my board.

If anyone has any other suggestions, that would be appreciated as I just want a cooler that I can just buy from Amazon that won't break the bank.

Work Rig - Ryzen 2700X, 16GB 3200Mhz, MSI B450 LN91340, HD 7970 Ghz (I know...), SB 1500
XP Rig - C2Q Q6600, 4GB 800Mhz, GA-P31-DS3L , GTX 750Ti, SB 0820
98SE Rig - AthlonXP 1700, 512MB 166Mhz, NForce A7N8X-X, V3 2000 PCI, Aureal Vortex 2 SQ2500

If you've got a cooler that supports 775 and newer Intel brackets, do they have a different mount or is it the same for both sockets?

It is usually the same one, with a wide hole for all Intel LGA sockets.

Not all, but the common mounts with the triple hole style (or elongated hole) support 775, 115x, and 1366/2011/2066. Older 2-hole style usually supported 775 and 1366, with 115x missing since it is in between. Then of course there are weird narrow ILM mounts as well (HEDT ITX or server boards).

Edit, here's an example from my Cooler Master Hyper 212 Black Edition manual.

That's pretty interesting, makes me think that most brands would try to copy that, I like all the suggested offerings but they're a bit too much for what I'm prepared to pay for a system this old. Knowing Cooler Master, they've probably changed the mount for the 212, since PixelPipes couldn't get his to fit in his video.

I'll do a bit more digging online to see what's available, around £25 is pretty much my limit for a 775 cooler.

CM Hyper 212 Black I just purchased 2 weeks ago does indeed have the 775 mounts and fits fine. Maybe they have different versions in other countries.

Ebay.

There are 100's of listings for stock intel coolers, aftermarket coolers, and a wide range of "weapons grade chineseium".

775 was the start of the Intel era where very little differences were made in heatsinks. Go nuts.

It is a mistake to think you can solve any major problems just with potatoes.

That's where I end up going to if the socket is ancient enough to warrant a visit (478, Socket A). The main problem is that most stuff is either used, NOS or just re-branded junk (loud Chinesium comes to mind).

At least with Amazon and LGA775 , there's manufacturers well-known enough to have ratings and still be able to give support/warranty if anything's wrong with it. If the main brands fail me, you can be sure I'll be heading straight to Ebay to see what's there to see.

They're next on my list to contact about compatibility.

They'll probably think it's a wind-up call asking about 775, 10 years after it got phased out.

It's always fun contacting companies about long out of date products. My last few emails and calls were to Shuttle about my HOT-613 Dual Pentium Pro motherboard. They were actually really excited to hear I was still using something that old. 🤣

I wish Shuttle would make a big comeback, they were one of the few brands that really innovated with cases back in the 2000s. Seeing Lian-Li bounce back gives me hope that the current market still has room for new faces.

The hyper 212 still does, and I know for a fact the tx3 Evo does as well, though avoid the tx2 it's also 775 compatabile but it's woefully useless, it's meant for 95w or cooler chips

Thanks, gives me more options if the others don't work out

Many years ago I bought a low-profile Scythe Shuriken cooler (the Rev. B) for my E8400 based HTPC. That thing is whisper quiet and has served me well for years, with absolutely no maintenance required. In fact the loudest thing in the whole PC is the DVD drive, that's how quiet it is!

The cooler I have is no longer available new, but still a couple on eBay that are within your budget. Link to product page on manufacturer's site - http://www.scythe-eu.com/en/products/cpu-cool … iken-rev-b.html

You can still buy the Scythe Shuriken 3 new from the likes of Amazon & Scan which still supports Socket 775. It is a similar design to the one I have, so I'm guessing it performs about the same re-noise. But it's double your budget.

They look cool, and are built ok, but I would call them a quality product. Cooling could be a heck of a lot better and the build quality could be better. I believe it was the looks and price that sold them back in the day. I'm not trying to say its a bad heatsink, I do like them.too, just don't expect wonders out of a 30$ sink.

Almost all current Noctua coolers can be equipped with the NM-I3 SecuFirm2™ mounting kit to install them on LGA775.
I got mine for free after sending support a picture of my cooler and LGA775 motherboard. Their support is pretty awesome! 😀
