Ok what I'm starting to think is your cpu temp sensor is broken, can you swap in another cpu.

Not at the moment, no.

Ok, so me thinks that the CPU is the problem and it is running way throttled.... or the cache on the CPU is not working or something.

Looking at the CPU-Z bench listings, a Pentium D 3.0 Ghz is supposed to score about 10x as much as you are seeing on single thread and about 15x as much as you are seeing on multi-thread:

Yikes. What a shame. Pentium D's seem to be really cheap on eBay, I'm buying one right now and I'll get back to y'all once I do the upgrade.

Good idea it really looks like either your cpu is faulty or your bosrd

Or the cooler. I have seen those Dell heatpipe coolers leak out and not cool the CPU anymore which causes throttling.... but CPU-Z showed full speed so it doesn't make a lot of sense.

I almost think if the 100C temp is wrong then the cache on the CPU has to be bad.. but the only time I've seen one with bad cache it was making the system crash.

It has to be either the CPU or the cooler or the cooler not being mounted properly.

If the cooler is mounted properly, then it should squish out the compound to be almost nothing if the stock grey dell trash was not used.

Yes but this era of dell coolers is darn near idiot proof, they mount on a hinge and if one side isn't hinged right you can't screw it down

Yeah I wouldn't be surprised if the CPU was bad. I got this PC almost 4 years ago from someone who worked at my high school's tech school. It was full of garbage and ransomware and all that jazz. Hopefully I'll get this up and running soon.

For now I'll see if I can get audio working without screwing up my games. The audio drivers on Dell's site are busted and for the life of me I can't find any older drivers. I don't want to buy an audio card unless it's really necessary. Anyone have any ideas about that?

This is true... Same goes for the newer ones.

Yeah, didn't really fix stuttering. Oh well, I'll just buy a good card.

I'll get back to y'all once the CPU comes.

I got my CPU in today, it's better for sure but it's still not perfect, at least I don't think. If it's the motherboard causing this I don't see what could be the cause, there's no bent pins in the CPU socket and no bad caps or traces.

Getting around 50-60 on the opening train scene in HL2, I'm getting 50-55 on highway 17. Doubt that's normal.
Far Cry 1 is also much better. 60-70 but there's still plenty of dips into the 40s.

Still doesn't give me any CPU temps either. Pretty stumped right now.

Try clearing the CMOS / BIOS settings. That looks an awful lot like the CPU cache is disabled.

nada, no difference. if there's a way to enable cache i don't know where it is.

Try Sisoft Sandra. See what the benches say.

One other thing. What version of the BIOS are you running? The latest is A07.

Is there anything else I can do? Seems like I've tired everything at this point. CPU-Z still has poor results and I still have low framerates for some reason and I don't know why.

I did another clean install, literally no difference. I don't know what to do. My mobo looks completely fine.

For the hell of it I booted Lubuntu off a USB and loaded some built in CPU test, I don't know what any of this means nor do I know if it's good or not but there you go. If this is normal, I wonder if Windows is limiting my speeds?

Have you tried a core 2 duo in that system? It's been a long while since I've had a Pentium D but I dont remember them being stellar performers

I don't think a C2D is compatible with the XPS 400.

You are correct your system doesn't have the vrm to support the core 2 CPUs. What speed ram do you have?
