Colleagues,

Next issue. I suddenly won’t get my card (ensoniq soundscape s2000) to work on midi 2/9. Program ssinit always says Irq in use. When I select it anyway and test midi I get the message irq2 not responding.

Just three hrs ago it worked I just Switched slot. Yes I tried all slots but same behavior. 2/9 seem free according to MSD see screenshot.

Any idea?
Pc is 486dx/2 66 vlb with award bios

Thank you in advance

Hmm so you put it back in the slot that worked and now it does not ? Clean the edge connector with ISO alc on a paper towel and try again in same slot it did work. Make sure you run ssinit DOS boot not some WIn9x window. Just a thought: if it worked then why did you move it (the old: if not broke then why fix it theory) ?

Hate posting a reply and then have to edit it because it made no sense 😁 First computer was an IBM 3270 workstation with CGA monitor. Stuff: https://archive.org/details/@horun

Thanks colleagues. I replaced for test purpose the card with an scc1 which is working fine at 2/9.
PM is already disabled but I check for maybe further options in the bios that I might have forgotten.
Also the point with cleaning connectors I will do.
Ssinit I did. Really annoyed at all a bit by that 486dx vlb Board with regards to io base and Irq addresses.

Running my sb16 now with scc1 works fine at the moment but yes: only for dune2 and doom. Strangely no music or fx for mk(2) and no fm at all. Also scc-1 Check reports wrong adress. I go mad although everything should be separated

Irq 2/9 + 330 mpu
Irg5/dma1+5/220= sb16 plus mpu at 300
Network at Irq 10 io 340 (Card reports error Double usage when setting to 320 though)?!!!

At the end I think I will have to install win95/98 to get kind of a “good“ overview of Ressource usage etc.

But hey that’s why I did the project no pain....

It's not just the base address that matters. NE2000 cards use 32 I/O ports so if you set the base to 320 it would occupy all addresses between 320->340 and conflict with the MPU401 at 330.

True???? I will check that right after breakfast 😀

Ah okay: ....boards, occupy up to 32 registers—for example, from 0x320 to 0x33f.

I will change accordingly. So good to have at least “20” distance.

Changed address. No chance. Although music via scc1 is playing something is not right. See screenshot. FM although not working yet 😤

It could just be a case where the system chipset just won't allow IRQ2/9 to be free.
I have a couple 486 motherboards like that - one is VLB with VIA chipset the other PCI with SIS chipset.
It depends on how the board is wired in my experience, no change in bios or settings can fix that.

Is this really true? That would be worst case ever!
Anyway doom and dune2 and mortal kombat even larry3 plays midi. Cannot imagine that they are using by default others than 2/9 u know

It’s a chicony 471b rev2 MB

Ok I seem to have lot of other issues. Cannot even install win95/98 even with all cards taken out. I have to dive deeper I think. Damn

Ok so windows 95 installed and it uses all above mentioned irq bases and dmas now without problem. Ok it’s 2am now 😅

I will just not care about that checkscc.exe damn tool!

So everything fine
Thanks a lot.

IRQ 2/9 is used by ACPI. Can you disable it and go with APM or no power management at all?

He's talking VLB so pretty confident to say there is no ACPI 😁

That said, I was just reading some of the posts here about the (optional) VGA vertical blank interrupt and don't know if that could be a factor.

True dat. Didn't notice he's rocking a 486. 🙁

If it's just the PIC reserving the IRQ, you should be okay.

Everything is working now. I was mislead by the checkscc.exe error message only

Update final:
No mistake at the end. The IRQ 2/9 won’t work flawless on that chicony. Although scc-1 is running in practice but showing errors in checktools, my soundscape refuses still completely for midi.

Tested now on my 386er board: no problem. All tests passed!

Ain’t that strange?!
