Hi people,

I found a PC-104 board with a 386SX @40MHz with some ram which does power up but since it has no video output I can not see what it does.
It does beep, 2 short beeps then a short pause and then 8 short beeps.

Google found me this is either ram or videocard.
The last option sound reasonable to me, since it doesn't have a videochip on board or an external videocard.
I have an old ISA videocard (acumos avga2) which I don't know if it is working and an old 486 motherboard with bad battery leakage damage.
Now I am considering to build a PC-104 to ISA adapter so I can test it.

should I do this?

If it works I am thinking about building a ISA backplane for the PC-104 bus.

On a similar note: is there a specific term for PC/104 cases? I'd like to build myself a little stack of PC/104 hardware, but despite this being an old and much-used standard, I'm not having any luck finding things to build it in...

I don't think there would be any specific term but "PC/104 case", these weren't really meant to go into cases anyways but to be used in other industrial or automotive equipment mostly.

386sx40? That’s new to me. Always thought they were built up to 33 only

386SX40 was only produced by AMD, and was QFP (ie soldered to the board)

See my graphics card database at www.gpuzoo.com
Constantly being worked on. Feel free to message me with any corrections or details of cards you would like me to research and add.

PC104 to ISA is indeed quite straightforward :

I upgraded one 386SX board to a 40MHz one not so long ago :

I done that same way except on a compaq LTE 386s/20 using a AMD 386SX-25 and clock generator oscillator changed and that was back in the day (around early '94)!

Cheers,

Respect for getting this soldered !!!
my sx25 vlsi board won’t exceed 30MHz unfortunately.
