So I acquired an Acer acros 486dx33 computer used recently. It's got a1g 93113-2 motherboard in it with 28 megs of ram in it. My three questions are is it's got a 4isa riser card installed in it, is it possible to replace that card with one that has PCI on it as well? Also the spec sheet I can find online lists dx4 100mhz as the best chip it can handle. I'm curious if any of the AMD 120mhz or 133mhz 486 X5 chips would work on it? Lastly is the btc 1853l sound card any good? My goal is to use it as a windows 95/dos gaming machine eventually get a mpu card and hook up my ra-50 (a mt-32 based machine), sc-55 (or maybe 88).

This is the specs I found online. Not sure if linking this is ok https://www.arvutimuuseum.ee/th99/m/A-B/35881.htm

Without knowing what the chipset is and whether it supports PCI, that question can't be answered .

That said, a machine of that vintage almost certainly has no PCI capability .

EDIT: And without PCI or VLB, a faster CPU would be seriously bottlenecked . Also, even if the chipset supports PCI, that doesn't mean the riser slot is wired for it or that a PCI riser was ever made .

Are riser cards specific to brand? Like could I get a Dell riser with 2 PCI 2 Isa?

ISA ones are rather generic. PCI or PCI/ISA ones are not, AFAIK .

Again, knowing the chipset is definitely the first step .

EDIT: The board seems to use an ALI M1429G chipset, which according to unofficial Internet sources, is PCI and VLB capable (apparently one of the first PCI capable ones). So though a VLB or PCI riser for the board could theoretically exist, if the riser slot only has ISA signal pins, such a riser would be impossible .

A1G board info (some):

No mention if you can use a different riser. However seeing it's still in the VESA timeframe I doubt it will take an ISA/PCI riser.

So if I look at the chips on the board it would help tell if it's PCI compliant? I'm sorry if these are noob questions, I've not used a 486 since I was 10 years old. Just trying to figure out how good I can make this computer for older games.

From a practical perspective, even if a different riser with VLB or PCI exists identifying a part number or finding one may be almost impossible (at least in a reasonable amount of time).

It may be better to sell this system and find one with the expandability you want .

I'm mostly wanting to get the cpu as fast as I can, Isa is fine with me. I'm actually not able to really think of anything I'd want in PCI for a 486.

Even a 66MHz 486 will be bottlenecked rather severely by an ISA video card, AFAICR . Maybe you are lucky and that onboard Cirrus Logic chip is internally hooked up to VLB or PCI, though . I would run some benchmarks to try to find out .

If onboard video is ISA, I would not bother upgrading the CPU, personally, but it's been too long for me to remember actually how bad ISA on a fast was, so it's probably best if someone with more recent experience (or better memory) on the matter chimes in .

So I put in a 486dx4100 by AMD. I think I got the jumpers correct, but I see nothing on the screen when I turn it on. The CPU and power supply fans turn, but no video. Any suggestions?

Why do you think, that 3Volts CPUs work in this mainboard?

Because that is the board layout and it's got a listing for the AMD 486dx4100. Is there a setting I need to change for voltage?

Is there a voltage regulator on the board?

It won't boot with the 486 dx33 either

What do you mean? 486dx 33 is a 5 volts cpu.

EDIT: So the PC does not boot with the 486 DX-33 either?

I turn it on, I see a momentary flash of the CD access light, I hear the hard drive. But no video at all

Again: With the DX-33 the PC works or not?
You did not answer my question: Is there a voltage regulator on the board?

I don't know what a voltage regulator would look like or where it is. It won't boot with the intel dx-33 or the AMD Dx4-100
