I’ll second that a GF4 MX440 is a decent choice for a Win 98 Tualatin build

No it isn't and never was.

I can get an Fx5900, Ti4200 and 9600 Pro Radeon / 9800 for decent prices.

FX5900.

I only suggested it because OP already has the MX 440 and said the intent is to play games like SC 3000 and AoE II. These run fine on much slower hardware than a MX 440. However, you're right that an FX 5900 is a much better choice within the context of the original post which was asking for "the most powerful GPUs possible."

Thanks everyone for all your help, I'll settle for the FX 5600 Extreme my friend will give me. It's an MSI like my board, I like that too.

I'm just missing the Tualatin compatible cooler/heatsink and I'm all set. Or if you know of coolers from other sockets that can be adaptable for this I'm all ears. Bending the metal piece on a socket 370 heatsink is a solution that I would prefer to avoid.

I have this Arctic Cooling Copper Silent 3 socket A cooler.

Or some other socket A cooler, but make sure the metal mounting clip has three mounting holes

Socket A coolers are great for Tualatins.

Great news, that I can get easily. I can't tell you how much help I've had from Vogons and the patience you have with beginners like me!

There's no need to go overboard on the GPU. A geforce 3 Ti200 or a Radeon 8500 are the fastest cards you could get for this build. The CPU is a bottleneck for newer cards. If you go newer then a Geforce 4 Ti / Radeon 9600 you could actually start to see a drop in performance VS using older cards. This would be especially true for something like a 6800 or a X800. I use a Geforce 4 Ti 4600 in my tualatin build and it's kind of overkill.

I agree with using a socket-A cooler that has 3 mounting holes - but I still find them to be excessively tight on a Tualatin so I'd still bend it to reduce the pressure.
When buying lots of used motherboards I found broken sockets frequently, and also broke a couple myself. It's a much more likely danger to P3 systems than overheating is.

A beefy socket-A heatsink is overkill for a P3 so they don't need much clamping pressure.
