I already posted about my 486 Pentium Overdrive build. The motherboard is 486 PCI Socket 2 Mustek/Mecer B887. The board has an AMI BIOS dated 02/16/96 and jumpers for 3.45 volts. My question is what are the changes of a Cyrix 5x86 CPU working in this motherboard. I am interested in trying one out instead of my Pentium Overdrive 83MHz CPU.

Cyrix 5x86 requires specific support from motherboard.

I was thinking as much and that you probably need a Socket 3 board as a starting point. Thanks for the info.

Specific support is ideal, but not in any way required.

Cyrix 5x86 has a chance to work on pretty much any 486 motherboard so long as you have a voltage regulator.
Linear Burst Mode is one of the Cyrix specific features, but it provides minimal performance improvement.
Write Back L1 cache support is more important.
The remaining features more or less work without BIOS or chipset support. You just need to use a software utility to enable them.
