Nice.

So if you had tried putting the original Dallas chip back in, it wouldn't have worked?

I wonder if not posting with the chip missing was something enforced by the chipset itself, vs. the CPU.

In the end, you didn't have to do any of the asm stuff to turn on the oscillator? I figured that BIOSes presumably do that on their own, or there would be a lot more discussion about it.

Unfortunately I tossed the old chip so I couldn't test that theory.

I might have damaged the weak pin when I levered out the old RTC. Who knows.

Nope. Did not need to use debug to start the oscillator. It just worked. Entered into bios and it had the year as like 9999 like the other guy in the thread mentioned.
