On many old 286 mainboards and also on ISA graphics cards memory upgrades are possible via ICs (for example with the 71C4256).
Usually these boards / graphics cards have DIP sockets (dual in-line package).
I already have SOJ 20(26) memory chips (small-outline J-leaded package) and DIP-chips are kind of expensive at the moment. SOJ 20(26) means a SOJ26 format with the 3 middle pins missing on each side:

Does anybody have an idea for a convenient adapter? I was thinking about something like this: https://www.amazon.de/sourcing-map-1-27MM-0-6 … +dil+pcb&sr=8-2
but it is hard to find SOJ20(26) to DIP 20. I thought about soldering the SOJ-chips in a new DIP20 socket and then plugging this assembly into the mainboard/ graphics card sockets... this would be cheap but a lot of filigree soldering. So maybe there is a better way?

Not mine, but it appears you can order them here since someone made a PCB for it. https://oshpark.com/shared_projects/Slgu1Lwu

Nice! This is what I was looking for 😀!

Wouldn't the extra width prevent that from being used in the most common layouts where the memory IC sockets are all side by side and touching?

You can stack additional DIP sockets every other chip. This method is commonly used in Amiga computers to raise CPU accelerators and other chip conversions. It isn't ideal, but works.

This is same issue with width also, I have compaq expansion memory card that is tight, have to look into making these but one problem is pins for dip has to be SMT on one side.
Width of SOJ solder leads and DIP leads is very close.
