Hi guys,
I recently bought an external CD-ROM (LPT) for my 386 DX 40 machine.
The seller enclosed 2 floppies - one with manuals and one with drivers.
Unfortunately, the drivers are for Windows 95 and up.
However, I need them for DOS.

I tried these: https://vetusware.com/download/CD Blazer drivers/?id=5916 (CD blazer) and these: http://minuszerodegrees.net/backpack_cdrom/ba … kpack_cdrom.htm (Backpack)
None work; the drive isn't recognized.

OnSpec CD Blazer driver message: CD not responding.
Backpack drivers say "a Backpack CD-ROM drive was not found".

I've tested the LPT cable that came with the CD drive and the LPT port on my PC; they work fine.

The chipset (Host Adapter) that the drive uses is OnSpec 90C26E Rev. 0x55.

Do you guys have any ideas; how could I get this working?

Thanks

Could you upload the contents of the two floppies you got with the drive, thank you.

From googling around ValueStor made external CDrom drives using the same 90c26 chipset, you can get some details on the archived version of http://members.aol.com/ValuStorTS/TSSware.htm on the Wayback Machine.
There are different drivers between models with or without a power switch, sadly none of the files are available anymore on the original website.

Looking at the CD Blazer driver, it seems to support the OnSpec 90c35 chip, so probably not compatible with your drive.
That said, did you try any of the optional switches for the DOS driver, like /U to force uni directional mode.

There is a RedHat 5.2 boot disk image supporting your CD drive at http://cyberelk.net/tim/parport/rhs.html in case you're tempted to install that on your 386.

How did you test the Parallel port ?
Am sure those external drives need the port set as a EPP port or Bi-directional port.
If set as a SPP external devices will not work because they cannot communicate with the driver or send data back thru the port to the computer...

Hate posting a reply and then have to edit it because it made no sense 😁 First computer was an IBM 3270 workstation with CGA monitor. Stuff: https://archive.org/details/@horun

Thanks for your answers, guys.

@lolo799, sure, I can upload them. Will do that later today. One of the floppies seems to be original (the one containing the assembly/disassembly and install manuals). The other one (with the drivers) isn't.
I did try the /u switch etc., but there was no difference.

@Horun, I "tested" the LPT port with the CMSlpt soundcard (directly and with the cable).
One of the test programs of the CD Blazer software (testport, porttest - something along those lines) detects the port as "unidirectional", chipset: unknown.
How could I change the port's mode? Is there a program for that? Haven't noticed anything about it in the BIOS.

Synchrome also made drives based on the same chipset as yours but the DOS drivers are also missing:

Found the following OnSpec drivers on driverguide, give it a try.

@lolo799: Thanks, will try those if they happen to be different from the ones I got on another site.

Uploads in the attachments:
driver.zip - contents of the "driver" floppy disk.
manual.zip - contents of the "manual" floppy disk. Also contains the cdd2000 driver (that's the drive currently inside the enclosure). To get to the manuals, you can extract the contents of"2-CLICK.EXE".

Cdblazer drivers came up while looking for another parallel port product.

Get cdblazer1.zip for Dos/Win3x (cdblazer2.zip contents are the same as those you uploaded from your floppy disk) from
