Hi all,

How easy would it be to add a DB15 gameport to an old PII motherboard with an integrated ES1869F chip?

Looking at the pinouts for the ES chip here:
http://www.diamondsystems.com/files/binaries/ … 9techmanual.pdf

I can see the Midi serial in and out are on pins 58 and 59. I don't care about joystick functionality at all just midi out via the DB15 port.

What I'm not sure about is what resistors (and any other electronics) I would need between the ES chip and the DB15 port for the Midi out line?

Looking at other soundcards, it looks like just a resistor typically sits between the sound chip's midi out and the gameport.

Thanks.

I actually looked into this for my Compaq Deskpro, which has solder pads for the port header. Indeed a single resistor should be enough for midi out functionality, but I didn't feel like actually soldering to my mainboard. That would be the 2.2k r12 in Figure 39.

Geez... Well that's embarrassing; I guess I never scrolled down far enough in the pdf...

That's interesting; the motherboard I have is actually a Compaq Deskpro EN SFF. I'm curious, which Compaq Deskpro board do you have that has a solder pad for a DB15 gameport on the board? I thought mine did too but not after testing the voltages on the solder pad (lower, left-hand corner) for the expected +5 volt pins:

I was using the following as a reference for the solder pad pinout:

Specifically pinouts listed in the B1 image from the link above - the grounds match but not the +5 volt pins.
