I have a Monoprice CF->IDE adapter (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001TIXJ5U/) in my 486. I tried using a SD->CF adapter to use SD cards with it but the machine won't POST with the CF adapter inserted. The adapter I have is this - https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B019REDBY6/ .

Does anyone know of a SD->CF adapter that they know works? Thanks in advance!

I have had a similar experience as you with the "Extreme CF Adapter". It works fine enough on modern equipment as a removable storage, but it isn't detected properly by PC BIOS when is connected via 40 pin IDE connector. I tried it with a number of different boards and didn't have any luck. I'd be interested in hearing from anyone who was able to make an SD volume visible in DOS using these adapters.

Perhaps it requires 3.3V power?

I was able to use a "Extreme CF Adapter" with a PC when I used a CF-IDE adapter that allows for 3.3v operation. It does not work when the same adapter is set to 5v power.

I was also able to confirm that the device uses the same FC 1307 chipset as all those other SD-IDE adapters, and the fastest it talks to SD cards is SDHC, 25MB/s, so don't expect to see much of a speed increase from UDMA >= 2 or SDXC flash cards.

I thought I had tried it at 3.3. I'll look again to be sure! Right now, I just want it to work. Old HDDs weren't incredibly fast to begin with.

Thanks!

I've had a similar experience but with one of these jabronis:
https://www.amazon.com/Syba-Compact-Adapter-E … 6/dp/B0036DDXUM
I cracked it open, and it's just a simple mechanical adapter. Can't remember if it has a voltage divider for 3.3v. But, either way, it doesn't have a jumper for it, so it is what it is.

I connected it to a 44pin to 40 pin adapter. It works perfectly fine in a newer VIA C3 based system with ATA-4 controller, but my 486 with ATA-2 controller won't post with it connected. I tried it with multiple CF to SD adapters with the same results. I just wrote it off as a compatibility issue.

I would love to be wrong about this, so someone please correct me, but getting things to work on older ATA-2 controllers is a crapshoot.

On my 486, I'm using an SD to IDE adapter like this one:
https://www.amazon.com/KOOBOOK-1Pcs-40Pin-Ada … e/dp/B07YFPX7JB
Disclaimer: I'm not using this specific one, but the picture matches, so it's probably the same.
It works pretty well, but I discovered that some SD card sizes may not work properly depending on your BIOS. In my case, 8GB SD cards get recognized as 512MB, but smaller and larger sizes work OK. With XTIDE, it stops being a problem.

I almost bought one of those. Couldn't find one with a bracket mount.
