Hi everyone!

I got this old Optics Storage brand 8000 AT drive. Seems to be Sony interface, but pluging it in a 486 with a Sony CD card or Aztec sound card it doesn't seem to work. Tried standard IDE too.

Inside it's a Philips loading system with a Sony pickup. Has an OAK chip going out that 34-40 pin interface. Tray opens and closes fine, disk spins up but that's all it does. Could it be another proprietary interface?

It does use the Sony interface. You didn't mention anything about it so make sure you load the correct drivers for it.

Thanks! Forgot to mention that I did load driver. I have to dig up a Sony drive with that interface for comparison.

Thanks! Thats interesting. I really hoped I can just get it tested in dos. It just doesn't work with a Cor333 and Sony driver. I'll give it a try on Linux.

According to the FCC ID it was made by Optics Storage Pte Ltd, and looks like an OEM drive.

It would have to be an old Linux distribution though. Debian, for instance, removed the proprietary CD-ROM drivers from version 5 (lenny), released in 2009.

Right to repair is fundamental. You own it, you're allowed to fix it.
