Wow great work with this site. Bookmarked.
I have a huge M/B collection. If I have something not in the list I will send you.

I have more than one P5A with 1MB cache.
I have done more that 1 hour of video on this M/B. You can get some pictures from there.
Visually it is not that different, only the cache and the tag chip as I said in the video.

Regarding high resolution pictures of P5A. I would like to ask people to stop asking about these.
Please understand that I have spent so much money and time on this, and so far got nothing back.
It might happen at some point but not any time soon. I hope you understand.

I understand.

We're interested by any motherboard from the 80's 90's and early 2000's. Even if there's already a picture on our site, there's often a field of improvement.

We're also interested by BIOS dumps. From the Pentium era and onwards they're often available online, but older ones (8088-486) are way harder to come by.

As I said... I have many motherboards, I will defiantly contribute...
but not the P5A 1MB :p (this is not simple at all when you are -1000e on this).

Id hardly call any socket 7 best of the best. Tthe entire purpose of a socket 7 is to turn the cache off and down clock the CPU. To go slow. It's a great platform for that. If you want to go fast no matter what you do its terrible platform for that and you are better off with a Pentium III. It's really not even better than a VIA C3 C7 build if you want to go slow those are much better, and can be run on solid chipset like a 440bx not a shitty VIA or ALI one.

I somewhat agree here. I did not call socket 7 the best of the best.
There is no best of the best. It always depends on the games you want to run.
My setup beats all Pentium II and some PIII.
But yes, a slot1 / s370 is a very good option especially for more demanding stuff.
I have a lot of these, if I have time I will do more reviews.

For slow old games, I think a fast 486 is a better option.
Disabling caches on a pentium comes close but it is not equivalent.

In the end... SS7 was the first platform that I overclocked as a teenager.
It has a spacial place in my heart. That is why I started with this review.

I have 2 P5A rev 1.06 mobos, and one of them has 1 MB onboard (and yes its very fast in SS7 class, it can do 4500 points in 3Dmark2001 with FX5900XT and K6-3+ 617 (112x5.5)) cache (and has tag chip too, I've checked with wpcredit and strangely both tagchips (onboard and onchip) are active), the northbridge revision is the same (G) but the 1 mb is little bit older ('99 vs '00) , with the resistor mod (for + cpus) sadly the 1mb board is only stable in Dos and Win95/OSR2.X, newer op's like 98 is resetting/rebooting usually if the system is idle (under 2K/Xp/Linux even during the system startup, tried with different psus), under load (and normal cpus) it seems stable under 98 (the half mb board is prefectly stable with the mod any kind of ops). Stability is little better if prevent irq sharing (manaully add irq in bios) and increase the pci latency timer to 64, but not solve it, so the resistor mods are half success 1 off 2 prefectly stable.
Do you have any suggestion for the 1 Mb board or just i have no luck with it?

Hi Fenyo,
Yea, both tag chips are needed to be active, I explain this in my videos.

I have tested many of these boards with the 1MB cache and the resistor mod.
Having done multiple hours of testing, I can say this confidence...
I did not notice any stability problems under windows 98 or XP.
And that is with bus up to 120-124 and cache enabled.
The 1MB version is actually a bit more stable due to the 4ns cache chip.
So there is probably something wrong there 😒

BTW my top score in 3Dmark 2k1 fully optimized 124 x 5 = 620, W98 was ~4000.
I can not see how you did 4500 at 112 x 5.5. Check my videos.

The secret is Win95 OSR2.1 and 44.03 forceware (latency is 2-2-2-4, fast naj and write combining enabled and agp optimisation as well (ewbec 3 etc)), if i had FX5950 Ultra or 9800Pro it could be even more.

One smd condensator near to the cpu was missing, i solder it back, i dont know wheter this is in critical place or not but whithout the mod and normal cpus seems stable the mobo any kind of ops (Maybe I should recap the mobo, though they’re fine to look at).

Cool.

Could you take a photo of your board where all the chips labels are readable, especially the tag and cache chips ?

Thanks.

so it's an EliteMT LP61 64128F-4 and UT61256-8
that fits.
Thank you !

Hello.
You checked frequency more than 124mhz?
Thank you.

Yes, however the next Bus step is 133 MHz.
There it was unstable even with the L3 disabled.
I only managed to boot into Windows once.
There is still a chance that the problem is with the IDE controller.
I have to check this again in the future.

Asus p5a rev 1.06

Can I use my 1mb p5a 1.04 as reference for the small smd chips near the tag?

I have a P5A 1.06 with 512k cache and looks to have no TAG chip.

I also have a K6 III+ 550 I can use.
And either a voodoo3 3500 or Geforce 2 mx400 (both agp)
Along with 128mb CL2 133mhz ram stick.

What steps should I take to get the most out of this platform?
I understand that I should do the 1k ohm resister mod to the back of the socket... what else?

I also have a hard drive with multi-os boot. Win95, 98, ME, 2k.

I hear people use something called CTU, WPCREDIT, ALI software and Registry edits/modifications...

Anyone have any walkthrough/guides on how to do this? Would love to play around with benchmarks with all the different agp cards I have.
My K6III+ can hit 650mhz on my GA5AX rev5.2, but I have this P5A 1.06 that I'd like to play with to compare.
