Edit: Couldn't the 1MB be configured for the 0-640KB range, too?
If the 286 chipset does have at least a little bit of intelligence,
it should be able to start with its first 640KBs of memory beyond 1MB.

no everything on the board is hardwired to where it is, that's why the "1MB card" would only provide 96kB

You're right about 8-bit for EMS on some add-on cards, if all OP wants is EMS then the 2MB lo-tech would be adequate, but the other cards I mentioned provide extra 16-bit XMS as well

If you want to go past 1MB total RAM, you need to get 1Mx1 DRAM chips. Nine of them per MB - so 18 if you want to go to 2MB or 36 if you want to go to 4MB

Will these work then? https://www.ebay.com/itm/323774437581

You already got the answer that these are the right chips in the wrong package.

This offer looks like the right chips: https://www.ebay.de/itm/254700525863 . I'm not affiliated in any way with that seller, it's just the first hit for a big lot of 1Mx1 chips I found on ebay. I'm not recommending this offer or imply it is good value. I want to stress that your only options are 18 chips or 36 chips (that's the numbers maxtherabbit explicitly mentions in the quote). The number "9 of them per MB" is just how to calculate the amount of chips. The board is only able to use full groups of 18 chips, so 9 chips for 1MB or 27 chips for 3MB will not work. The key point for searching for the required chips is to include "DIP 18" in the search terms, the name of the package you need.
