Hi, I've managed to obtain a Dell optiplex G1 and a GN+
The G1 has this odd port to the rear that looks like a ddr1 laptop socket, unfortunately I don't have any to see if it fits, but it boggles my brain what this port is for and why. Perhaps video extended memory ?

It's a slot for am SGRAM SO-DIMM, to expand the on-board video memory. It seems the G1 accepts a 2MB module to upgrade from 2MB to 4MB, whereas the GX1 needs a 4MB module to upgrade from 4MB to 8MB. I could find sellers for the 4MB GX1 module on google, but I couldn't find sellers for the 2MB module for your G1 quickly. If you are interested, you might try to search harder.
BRILLIANT! thanks for the info! The GN + has no obvious ports to plug expansion. One thing I have noticed tho windows 98 has all the drivers on the cd!! I don't think that's ever happened to me before 😂
Consider the size of Dell. They might well have arranged for that. OEM systems can be a pain in the rear end, but their clout is undeniable. If you're going to run Win98 those extra 2MB would be very useful, as it bumps up your max usable resolution; with 2MB you can do 800x600 in 24b (full colour), or 1024x768 in 16b, with 4MB you can do 1024x768 in 24b or 1280x1024 in 16b.

VRAM module socket. Lots of computers and video cards had them at the time, including the iMac.
It can never hurt to slap one in, but be careful when removing modules as the plastic tabs are prone to breaking.

At that price (both the part and the worldwide shipping) it's worth giving it a shot regardless. Iirc the Rage Pro Turbo normally runs at 75MHz RAM clock, so 8ns is more than fast enough.
Does not look like it is keyed properly for this slot but the price is definitely right to give it a shot.

Seems OK (25 / 47) - I have the exact part linked working in a few motherboards atm. Here's a shot from one of these (MGA G100)
The pic on the link is generic - this part actually comes with an SPD (which is what my particular board calls for) although it is available without as well.
Some server machines from the mid-2000s use a similar slot for an optional IPMI remote management module.
Is this too much voodoo?
