Helo, people ! Contiuning my eiger saga... I managed to detect ESS1688 under dos - booting from win95 command prompt - but now there are IRQ conflicts, sound card utility refuses to detect any available irq's - so maybe if I make free irq 7 it will run on it, but irq 7 is set for lpt port... how can I free it ? the machine is Compaq Contura 430cx notebok...

Can you disable IRQ7 for the LPT port on BIOS?

If there is no such option in BIOS, or you can't access BIOS setup easily, I would try CMOSer from here https://www.sac.sk/files.php?d=16&p=16

1) VLSI SCAMP /286@20 /4M /CL-GD5422 /CMI8330
2) i420EX /486DX33 /16M /TGUI9440 /GUS+ALS100+MT32PI
3) i430FX /K6-2@400 /64M /Rage Pro PCI /ES1370+YMF718
4) i440BX /P!!!750 /256M /MX440 /SBLive!
5) iB75 /3470s /4G /HD7750 /HDA

If two devices use the same IRQ, there's no IRQ conflict unless you're using both devices simultanously or are running a multi-tuser/multi-tasking OS..
Like OS/2 or Windows 9x, maybe. DOS alone should be safe.

Anyway, disabling an IRQ on an ISA LPT card is simple. On the card, just cut the IRQ line in question.
DOS and Windows 3.x don't use IRQ signals for printer communication. OS/2 does, however.

Edit: Just realized you're using a laptop. 😅

I don't know what board you have, but any typical award bios will have the option to reserve IRQs for legacy ISA. I use an LPT sound card and that is part of how I manage. For my system IRQ conflicts with LPT absolutely has an effect on some games but not most of them, so I typically run my sound card on IRQ 5 and my LPT on IRQ 7. You could easily reverse them too if that is easier for you.

IT's a Compaq Contura 430CX and Compaq LTE/ELite 75CX notebooks I'm trying to run this card with... both are 486DX4 with ms-dos 6.22 and in 95osr2
