SCSI on a modern PC

I have a SCSI Zip250 I'd like to hook up to my main PC (to make life easier copying or running stuff to/on my PS/2 Model 70 386 which has a parallel Zip100 attached). But USB to SCSI adapters are REALLY expensive on eBay and I can't find a PCIe SCSI adapter with a 'normal' external connector - I want 25, 50 or 68 pin at a push.

Any tips? I could just buy a USB Zip drive I guess but that's being defeatist - this Zip250 was from when I did some beta testing for Iomega (and told them how rubbish this drive is). The fact it was rubbish means I don't want to spend much on the solution 😀

Oh my main PC isn't that new - a low profile HP Z230 workstation - but it only has PCIe slots.

Cheers,
Steve

Oh I literally just found this on eBay after posting that and have bought it! I have some PCIe extender cables so I can have an old PCI SCSI card hanging out the back of my PC I hope! 😀

almost all SCSI controllers will not work on 64bit microsoft operating systems at home user level.
As of such, SCSI I would recommend for just about all PCI ISA ones best used on linux or up to windows 7. 32bit that is.
Including your extender idea with it 😀
FYI: yes extenders can be fun with SCSI cards but they can be slow I have used it for an adaptec PCI card it heated up so I must caution.

Oh boo! Well I'll have a bit of fun trying to get an old PCI SCSI card working on Windows 10 64bit anyway!

If they don't work, what else could I use this adapter for...... does the Matrox M3D work in Windows 10!?!? 🤣🤣🤣🤣

well, you can dual boot 32bit 64bit windows 10 on same rego so on 32bit windows 10 try an older o.s. driver for it?
Using an older PCI video card means you'll need a uncertified generic driver that will do graphics, not direct x but you might get opengl. (If it hasn't had an official driver released for vista or 7)
Such an arrangement for PCI GPU is great as a 2nd monitor used to keep an eye on a gaming rigs core temps etc.

Yes, I have a PCI SCSI adaptor (AHA-2940AU) in my test machine running both Windows 7 32-bit and 64-bit. The card is fully functional in 32-bit Windows 7 but not in 64-bit.

Is this too much voodoo?

PCI is no problem at all under windows7-64 bit... 😉

Did a bit of searching and found a PCIe one that reportedly works with Windows 10 64-bit using the Server 2008 R2 64-bit driver.

There is the Atto ExpressPCI UL5D that also is PCIe and seems to have 64-bit drivers, although it uses very-high density connectors (so you'll need a adapter dongle and all of that crap) and seems to be rather expensive on the used market.

The UL5D is expensive because it also runs on a last generation Powermac G5 PCIE tower (if you need an external SCSI RAID setup for video editing).

There are 64 bit drivers for some Adaptec 39160 PCI-X if your have a normal PCI slot (they will work of course you are stuck at PCI bus max speed).

Could you elaborate on this one?

I have an Adaptec 2940U2W that works fine in my 64b Ubuntu system and does not require root (admin) right to do so.

The topic starter wanted advice I assumed was windows. A common 64bit O.S.

I would assume a Linux user would comment about Linux eventually.
And thankyou for your experience in Adaptec on Linux; I'm sure a linux user would be grateful

The OP did not specify any 64-bit OS.

Apparently 32-bit is dead and nobody likes P4s.
Of course, as always, I'm open to correction...😉

Well I appologise 😀

Not in the OP. What is your issue with Linux anyway?

No I didn't specify 64 bit, but yeah I do mean 64 bit 😀

Thanks for the input everyone!

And that, my friend, is the CORRECT answer.

Its super convenient as well. And I think others mentioned windows compatibility, and I wanted to chime in and say, I use 7 & 10 64bit and have zero issue with the USB version. I tried the IDE version a while ago and it was nothing but trouble. I can only guess scsi will be just as obtuse.

It is a mistake to think you can solve any major problems just with potatoes.

FINE! I'll buy one "untested" probably means broken but as the Zip250 isn't that popular I'll give them the benefit of doubt 😀
