I have a serial + PS/2 compatible mouse that I use on my test bench, and wanted to get a spare because it's so useful. It's a Microsoft wheel mouse - the spares I picked up today are the MS Basic ones (no wheel). Interestingly they worked fine with the PS/2 port, but not with the PS/2 to serial adapter. Since neither worked, I decided to check the adapter.

I have three adapters and was using the green one:

Checking the pinouts, the green one looks like this (looking into the female PS/2 connector; numbered by the DE9 connector pins)

Which corresponds to this diagram found online:

The dark grey (middle) one has this pinout:

Now the important point: The MS Wheel mouse works with both the green and dark grey adapters. The MS Basic mouse only works with the dark grey adapter.

Hopefully this saves someone a bit of time, or saves some hardware from being binned!

It don't mean a thing if it ain't got 5-pin DIN.

By the way, the light grey adapter has this pinout:

It doesn't work at all, which isn't surprising since only 3 pins are connected. I guess it's for some other system and/or faulty.
Has anyone seen this type before?

For PS/2 mice that do not support the serial protocol anymore, you'll need a more sophisticated solution:
PS/2 to Microsoft Serialmouse Adapter Converter / Updated First Post / Firmware Update added

is the shield still connected and maybe connected to some pin ?

Right to repair is fundamental. You own it, you're allowed to fix it.

Yes, I know... or the easier solution in such cases is probably just to have both PS/2 and serial mice... 😀
