You might find this website from November 1999 useful for seeing what was available at the time. https://web.archive.org/web/19991122041714/ht … o.uk/hw_idx.htm

GeForce 256 were available then, as were P3 750 Slot 1 and Athlon 750 Slot A.

thanks, this is the real nostalgia for me: not having a sweet gaming pc and then reading the weekend paper ads to see what you -could- build, but know you're never going to... 😀

What's the exact page? Because clicking on systems and CPUs jumps me forward to pages cached in 2000

Unicorn herding operations are proceeding, but all the totes of hens teeth and barrels of rocking horse poop give them plenty of hiding spots.

It does for me as well. The links on the black menu bar link to pages from 2000. The hardware links (on the blue background) link to pages from Nov 22 1999

Still not seeing it, if I click on the yellow link in the blue background, it's giving me a 2000 page in the 1999 frame, so the top URL doesn't change from 1999 but this content https://web.archive.org/web/20000229050316fw_ … n.co.uk/cpu.htm is what is displayed and can be seen on hover over the links.

I just looked again, and you are right. It's the same for earlier versions of the page as well. The date seems to be 3 weeks into 2000. I'll see if I can remember any other sites I used back then.

I used to buy from Aria in the 90s, their site is a bust, jumps from April 99 to August 00, also a concern called MD but neither recent incarnation of an MD looks right and their sites only go back to 2010. Smaller places might have had urls like computershop.demon.co.uk but I think cache space priority for waybackmachine went to higher traffic and higher linked sites. One of those old and "out of date as soon as it was printed" internet directory books would be handy about now 🤣 I had one at some point, picked up cheap, think it's a few boxes deep in the "books that won't see light until I triple my shelf space" pile though.

An example of what a reputable clone builder offered just over the edge of 1999:
powerline2.jpg

Looks like based on the ads the system you'd build back then would be one with...

  • Motherboard: ASUS P3B-F Slot 1
  • CPU: Intel Pentium IIIB 667 MHz Slot1
  • RAM: 256 MB of PC-133 SD-RAM
  • Video: ASUS V6600 Deluxe (NVIDIA GeForce) 32MB video card
  • Monitor: 17" CRT or 19" if you were rolling in cash
  • Storage: 27 GB Quantum Fireball IDE HDD
  • Opticals: LG DVD/CD-combo drive (8x/40x) & Plextor Plexwriter (8x 4x 42x)
  • Sound: Creative SoundBlaster Live! OR (if you were a contrarian) a Diamond MonsterSound MX300
  • FDD: Nec 3.5" 1.44MB floppy drive (because yes)
  • Connectivity: 3Com Fast Etherlink XL PCI 100 Mbit
  • HIDs: Some kind of MS/Logitech wireless keyboard+mouse combo package
  • OS: Windows 98SE if you were a gamer, Windows 2000 if you were not.

The above is not an absolute top-of-the-liner but a very respectable and pricey configuration... A very likely build, I would say - if not one for the Arabian princes... 😉

[Install Win95 like you were born in 1985!] on systems like this or this.

Ahh those were the days. I built a machine for college shortly after the turn of the millennium.

My set up was a slot 1 P3 733 (coppermine), voodoo3 300 agp, 256 mb ram, 40 GB drive, and the much maligned SB Live. I'm not sure if i had a DVD or cd burner at that time, may have purchased later.

pricewatch was what i used to get an idea of the best prices. however all of this was purchased from indy vendors at the monthly computer show, sadly a thing of the past.

I wish i still had this hw 🤣

P1: Packard Bell - 233 MMX, Voodoo1, 64 MB, ALS100+
P2-V2: Dell Dimension - 400 Mhz, Voodoo2, 256 MB
P!!! Custom: 1 Ghz, GeForce2 Pro/64MB, 384 MB

Why not buy it now again? It would cost you less than originally. SDRAM, HDDs, SB Live, DVD drives, ATX cases cost peanuts. Slot 1 board prices aren't too bad yet, although high frequency slot 1 CPUs are rare. It may be too late in 5 years.

Pentium III 900E, ECS P6BXT-A+, 384MB RAM, NVIDIA GeForce FX 5600 128MB, Voodoo 2 12MB, 80GB HDD, Yamaha SM718 ISA, 19" AOC 9GlrA
Athlon 64 3400+, MSI K8T Neo V, 1GB RAM, NVIDIA GeForce 7600GT 512MB, 250GB HDD, Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ZS

I'm working on 1 GHz PIII build. Will post a thread at some point. I wouldn't say a lot of this stuff costs 'peanuts' haha
