But you skipped it completely and went to three for some unknown reason........

I picked up a used FSP300-60PLN off eBay a few months ago knowing it had good specs on the 5V rail. However, the latest version I could find was the -60ATV model. I found a new one advertised at a reasonable price and ordered that as well, with the used PLN as backup.

I’m not sure how period accurate it all is or even the wisdom of not going with a modern Seasonic but I’d love to have the PSU as best it can be for a 97-98 build.

I’ll be watching this thread.

Make sure not to buy any PSUs from Gigabyte, though, especially when you're buying from Newegg. 😉

(Yeah, I know, vintage systems probably won't use even close to 50% of the capacity of a modern PSU, but I still wouldn't take the risk. 😬)

I saw a mention of that in a different video but hadn't watched that specific video. I wonder if Gigabyte is the mfg of those or if they outsourced it like most PSU brands do.

This is the very reason why I would very much like to have real PSU reviews again. When HardOCP was doing PSU reviews it certainly seemed like PSU brands were putting out much better PSUs since they knew that they had a good chance of being called out if they put out crappy PSUs.

I might have seen a deer before weighed very similar to a paperclip, and I was like there's a psu in there wow.

Do examine any Deers that fall in your lap, I wouldn't recommend pursuing them due to issue noted above, but there were some solid ones made in the early last half of the 90s, when they were OEM for Asus. Those ones feel as weighty as Sparkle/SPI of the same ratings, then they got cheaped out.

Unicorn herding operations are proceeding, but all the totes of hens teeth and barrels of rocking horse poop give them plenty of hiding spots.
