Pretty much all U5S chips I came across in real life or internet are marked Copyright 1993, so I assume this line was released in 1993.

Can anyone point to any source of information for an exact date? Were these chips in the market in 1992?

I don't remember seeing these in North America until 1995, but they very well could have been sold in Asia earlier than that.

Says UMC "started making" in 1993 and started marketing in 1994. Interestingly, nobody else had CPUs on 0.6micron 600nm process until the DX4 and P75. Partially then it had to be pure terror on Intel's part that UMC were getting the jump on them in that regard.

Unicorn herding operations are proceeding, but all the totes of hens teeth and barrels of rocking horse poop give them plenty of hiding spots.

Aren't UMC like the world's third biggest chip maker today anyway, after TSMC and GloFo?

Yes, the very same.

They stopped making their own designs shortly after the U5 project, sometime in 1995.

Oh, and the "U" once stood for "Unicorn", hence the logo with thing sticking up in middle 😜

They didn't seem like such a major power back then, the foundry biz was more diversified in the 90s.
