Windows 3.x could run some protected mode games with 2MB of physical RAM when 4MB was required in DOS. Unfortunately max swap file size was dependent on physical memory size.

That’s not fully true iirc

- Dos4gw games also needed 4mb ram even under win31 command with swap. I tested it various times.
- Dos4gw games did require a 386
- windows versions of Dos4gw games (eg qfg4) needed as well the 386enhanced windows mode

1) VLSI SCAMP 311 | 386SX25@30 | 16MB | CL-GD5434 | CT2830| SCC-1 | MT32 | Fast-SCSI AHA 1542CF + BlueSCSI v2/15k U320
2) SIS486 | 486DX/2 66(@80) | 32MB | TGUI9440 | SG NX Pro 16 | LAPC-I

Anything Dos4gw related requires 32-bit protected mode and a 386+ CPU.
Since this topic is about a 286 AlexZ most likely was talking about 16-bit protected mode (that is available on a 286) when he referred to protected mode games.
