I recently bought a Syba Dual CF-IDE adapter and a 32GB CF card for my old Compaq Armada 1750 laptop. I've noticed a couple of problems though. The first is that the hard drive appears to be too big to allow for certain formatting from both the Compaq Quickrestore Windows 95 disc and a Windows 98 SE disc. However, I feel like my other problem is far more serious. As the name suggests, the adapter has two CF slots. Although I'm not certain, I feel like there is a conflict between the "CF2 SLAVE" and the CD-ROM drive of the laptop. If I install Windows 98 SE by copying the files onto the hard drive, the CD-ROM drive isn't seen at all without DOS drivers, and if I try installing through the CD, I end up getting a BSOD at the "searching for plug and play" devices stage of the installation process.
If the dual CF interface is the problem, I'm wondering if it's possible to fix it without buying anything more. Maybe cut a pin or something?
If that's not possible, any recommendations for replacement CF-IDE adapters?
Here are two screenshots of the adapter disassembled, front and back respectively
