The processor imposter as I am calling it, (a tweaker designed to fit in the second socket for when you are using processors that don’t work in dual) has passed prototyping. You will have to link a few pins that tyan didn’t connect but it adds more jumpers (dips) to the front of the board. So that’s nice giving full tillamook support and ss7 multiplier support. There are also primary socket based variants.

Anyway, more news.

Jan has created a j3 variant of the bios as well which provides a improved version of the hard drive size patch.

He sent me a link to it. Possibly to beta test. Unclear if it is final or not yet.

New bios! This should work on s1564s and s1564d

[quote=Sphere478 post_id=1084744 time=1656882200 user_id=45320]
Btw, Jan. I’ve tested your j3 tyan s1564 bios as much as I can with the drives that I have. It seems identical as far as I can tell to the j2 bios. Plenty stable.

I just don’t have the drives above 120gb needed to test it on for you atm. (My understanding is the latest patch is for the larger than 128gb drives)

But it seems stable enough to release it to the public. Ultimate retro and the thread in my signature would be good places to post it also btw.

Jan/ChkCPU:

Sphere478, thanks for thoroughly testing the Tyan S1564 patch J.3 BIOS.
Yes, you can send this J.3 BIOS to UR and post it in your S1564 thread.
I will put it up on my k6plus page as well, at the next update.

For everybody who is wondering why I changed the previous S1564 patch J.2 BIOS into this J.3 patch version: the J.2 BIOS would hang on > 128GiB drives and I’ve fixed this by improving the 32GiB bugfix code.

Although this J.3 patch allows drives larger than 128GiB to be used, the BIOS is still limited to 128GiB due to its LBA28 support. But when all code and data to boot the OS is placed in a partition below the 128GiB limit, the whole drive can be accessed by a 48-bit LBA capable OS after bootup! (Like Win2000 with SP3 or higher, WinXP with SP1 or higher, Vista or later, or Linux with kernel 2.4.19 or later.)
This workaround allows the use of drives up to 640GiB on this J.3 BIOS.

This workaround also works on all Award 2000-2003 BIOSes because Award put the same improved 32GiB bugfix in these BIOS versions.
Note that to fully break the 128GiB barrier, you need a BIOS with 48-bit LBA support but these came later in 2004, after the ATA-6 specification was published in 2003.
In addition, you have to use a 48-bit LBA capable OS.

here is a Mr bios for the s1563

I tried it on the s1564 and it didn't seem to damage anything (but only try this if you have a chip programmer.)

couldn't get it to boot. any of you have any ideas? bios and setup worked though. seemed to post okay.

Sphere, I have an S1563D that I bought new in HS "~late 90s" but over the years from moving it's gotten some scratches on the bottom that have cut traces and it no longer posts.. do you think it is possible to repair?

Usually you can fix that if you have good soldering skills. You use solder and really tiny wires or just solder if the gap is thin

traces by cpu socket are so close together.. I'd need a much better magnifier

It look me a lot longer than ‘a few weeks’ to finish the S1564 patch J.4 BIOS.
The 366/400MHz speed fix was easy, but fixing the hang when using the IDE HDD AUTO DETECTION menu in the BIOS Setup on > 64GB drives proved to be a challenge.

Although the 32GB and first 64GB limit bugs were fixed in both the J.2 and J.3 BIOS, there was a second 64GB bug in another part of the BIOS that I was unable to change, until now. This second 64GB limit bug only came up when using the IDE HDD AUTO DETECTION menu on a > 64GB drive, or manually inserting the disk parameters for a larger than 65535MB drive in the STANDARD CMOS SETUP menu.

So this J.4 BIOS has the improved 32GB bugfix and also the extra 64GB bugfix so you can use the IDE HARDDISK AUTODETECTION menu in the BIOS on drives > 64GB. All the other patches are the same as in the previous J.3 BIOS.
And you should now see 400MHz at every cold boot when the CPU is set to 6x66. 😉

Here is the brandnew S1564 patch J.4 BIOS for you to try:
http://home.hccnet.nl/j.steunebrink/hx669_j4.zip

Please let me know how this new J.4 BIOS works.
Jan

It lives!!!

I don’t have it set up to use the hard drives the patch is for though. Someone else will have to test that part.

Hi Sphere,

Thanks for testing the new Tyan S1564 patch J.4 BIOS! 😀
I've just updated my "The Unofficial K6-2+ / K6-III+ page" and this S1564 patch J.4 BIOS is now available for download from http://www.steunebrink.info/k6plus.htm

I still see j3 on the download link name.

Can you host it here also? 😀 good to have redundancy:-) never know, someone might be looking for it 50 years from now! :p

Yes, I saw the same after uploading the updated k6plus page.
But a refresh of the page in my browser fixed it. 😉

Anyway, here is the patch J.4 BIOS as well.

What do you all think about the chances of this card outperforming a radeon 7500/9250 is?

My guess is the GF2 MX400 will probably perform similar to the Radeon 9250. However, with the GeForce card you can run the magical v45.23 drivers and you also get palletized texture and fog table support.
