Definitely go for it. It's a 5x86 133Mhz with PCI and 72pin SIMM memory. The best 486 there is.

Pentium III 900E, ECS P6BXT-A+, 384MB RAM, NVIDIA GeForce FX 5600 128MB, Voodoo 2 12MB, 80GB HDD, Yamaha SM718 ISA, 19" AOC 9GlrA

I see, thanks for clarification! I am going to get it then, the best part is the price: $50 😀

Hello,

When you want to use a DX33, I would suggest, that you also remove the cache module. Otherwise it might be too fast.

I know! I got it, and after Changing 7 jumper settings, was able to install my 486DX-33:
33Mhz speed finally baby!

Now to test Turrican II, Wing Commander, and Tyrian!

Consider yourself lucky you "missed out" on that first motherboard from your introductory post. I feel sorry for the sap who won that thing....hope it didn't sell for more than $10. My God...

And, congrats on the find. Very nice!

And changing the CPU that is in there with a 486-33? I should smack your hand for doing such a thing! 😉

Isn't turbo button sufficient to slow down 5x86 133? Or combination of turbo button and 25Mhz FSB (= 100 Mhz) ?

I know! But believe me, I have *too many* Pentium 70, 90, 200 systems, I just needed a system so I could play older DOS games *without* constantly using SetMUL to disable L1 / L2 cache!

My DX-33 seems to play these games like a champ! Turrican II finally!

Quick Questions:

1) Another close by shop called and seem to have an Abit AB-PB4 in good shape. Should I get that and replace my existing motherboard? (PCChips M919 VER 3.3B/F, also know as Amptron DX-9700)

2) What would this Abit board offer over my current motherboard?

Thanks!

If it's cheap then go and get it. Having a replacement board is useful in case you run into instability issues and need to troubleshoot it.

you have all the luck huh?

that's another great board, if it's cheap you should get it :p

but it's also another late 486 board that's really suited well to faster CPUs rather than a DX33 system.

Now a quick question about the Hard Drive LED activity:

When I connect my case's Hdd LED connector, it is *always* solid red (no flashing, indicating hard drive activity that is).
When I reverse this connector and connect the opposite way, the case LED is OFF.

Any ideas how to fix it?

And while I am at it, do you know how to change the turbo speed LED indicator on the case? At the moment I am reading 22, but I need to change it to 33 of course! (I am not using a Turbo switch, or case connector for it), I just want it to always display 33!

For the LED indicator just mess around with the jumpers on the back of the display till you get the reading your after, doing this with it turned on wont hurt anything and as no standard exists for how to configure these things trial and error is the best way.

Not sure about the HDD led, I've also got a PC that does this but didn't notice till it was all put back together and plugged in so just left as is, at least I know i have a HDD I suppose 😀

UPDATE:

When I install either of the SB16 (CT2900) or AWE64 (CT4500) I get crackled speech (digitized sound). Both cards are fine when utilizing music (AW64 Midi sounds normal)

I know both of them are OK, as I have used them many times in my other systems (P-90MHz, 233AMD, etc.)

I have 2 other (PCI based however) sound cards: SBLive! and Yamaha (YMF724F-V), that I can test out on this machine, but they are not *period correct*, and I was hoping I could use either of my SB16 or AWE64 instead.

Do you know why I get this crackling sound? Is it my CPU?

Thank you for your kind comments and help in advance.
