So long time lurker of these forums over many years, and as I am going to be turning 39 this August I guess this purchase maybe means I am hitting my mid-life crisis? Anyhow I got an itch to 'relive' my youth in computers and wanted to buy the same computer as I had back in 1993. Which was a Packard Bell 486/DX2 pc with dos/windows 3.1. I cant recall the exact model but it was a full 'multimedia' enhanced option. Anyhow after some digging I found one like it but while it had a video and such showing it all working the seller on ebay wanted 550 some dollars for it. A bit too high for my taste. So I figured ok let's get a pc of that era with the same or better hardware.

The restrictions though were it had to have:

  • Must have a 486/DX2 cpu with 66mhz cpu and 33mhz or faster bus
  • Must have at least 1mb or higher video capacity either on board or by a half decent era appropriate video card
  • Must have a working at the time of purcahse 1.44mb floppy and 2x or faster working cdrom drive
  • Must have some kind of half decent sound card option either on board or by card
  • Have memory options to support up to least 64mb
  • Must have at least a 200+mb sized HDD and a bios capable of up to 2gb (last part here is optional but really desired)
  • Be a machine that originally came with Dos 6.22 and Windows 3.1/3.11
  • I could not spend more then 300 dollars for all the above must haves, including any extra purchases in the near future (memory, cache chips, etc)

With this all in mind I was SO overjoyed to find an ebay listing by a company out of New York called Sunnking. They had this beauty:

IBM-1.jpg
Filename
IBM-1.jpg
File size
769.35 KiB
Views
2154 views

Which just arrived today after ordering it on Monday. The original listing was $300 + tax/$26 shipping. I contacted the company directly and got to talking to the tech and lister for the computer. After talking with them for 45 minutes on what I wanted to do with it (mostly display and maybe a little gaming), they dropped the price to 150 dollars including tax/shipping! I jumped on it on the spot and was SO happy to come way in under my budget.

The system as it arrived has a 486/DX2 66mhz cpu , 4mb of ram (I already expanded it to 128mb from buying the sticks separately), 128kb L2 cache which I'd like to expand to 256kb if I can figure out what exactly chips are needed, and 1mb on board video memory using a S3-864 chipset. Again i'd like to up that to 2mb so any insight onto where or what specific dram chips i need to get would be awesome! It is preinstalled with a 270mb HDD with DOS 6.22. The internal case is a lightly dusty but nothing major, coloring on the case is minimal from age which i love. Only thing I noticed so far i'll need to do to get a VGA monitor I got working with it is pull out one of the second row pins to make it work with the older VGA type it has.

Future plans:

  • Upgrade to 128mb (done!)
  • Install a 256kb L2 Cache
  • Install another 1mb of dram for the onboard video OR buy a dedicated video card of better quality without going too expensive
  • Install a 2gb HDD
  • Upgrade the bios if needed for Y2k and other support/stability (must investigate this!)
  • Maybe put in a better sound card with higher performance/quality then the one in there at present (need to ID current card)
  • Install an ethernet card
  • Install Windows 3.11 with networking support to access in home file server for easier file transfers
  • Look at pricing and ability to install a higher 486/586 type CPU for faster speed provided price of part isnt too expensive

I'll get some more pictures posted up once I can, for now I hope I posted this in the right spot (I think I did?) but if not as a newbie I hope the mods wont get too angry on me 🤣

Nice story and nice 486. I'm in a bit same bandwagon with you considering age and motivation but decided to go with P1 instead.
After talking to them for 45 mins no wonder they put the price down, just to let them go. Can't imagine being on work and some dude explaining me his hobbies for almost an hour. I'd give you anything just to leave me free. 😅😅😅

Edit: I'm lying, I've been there. 🤦‍♂️😁

Nice. I am a few years younger, but used the 486SX/25 model of the same machine as a dialup NAT gateway in the early 2000s.

128MB is more than the cacheable range, even if you upgrade the cache to 256K. You may or may not care about this, depending on what you want to do with the system. You can run CACHECHK to see the boundary where memory stops being cached.

The onboard video on these is VLB, while if I remember right the only expansion slots on the riser are ISA, so you definitely want to stay with the onboard video.

You can't go wrong with a 3c509 (3Com EtherLink III) ethernet card.

CPU upgrade is made more complicated if the board doesn't already have support for 3.3V CPUs, and the board won't take maximum advantage of the upgraded CPU if it lacks support for a write-back internal cache.

By the way, Unicomp still offers beige model M ("Classic") keyboards that are derived from the keyboard design that would have shipped with this machine and made on the same machinery (spinoff from IBM/Lexmark).
Or you could go hunting down a used model M.

If you're primarily going to use that system for DOS gaming, you might want lower the RAM amount. Some DOS games (e.g. Aladdin) will refuse to run if more than 32 MB of RAM is installed.

Awesome rig though!

My first 486 was 486SX25 Valuepoint mode (
got it used). Chassis was a 6384 variant .

It had an onboard Tseng ET4000, which was way better than the TVGA8900B in my previous 386DX25, even though both intefaced through ISA.

At the time (1994ish), IBM had a public BBS in Montreal where I could get updated drivers.

I had loads of fun, hope you do too!

If the board supports a 40MHz bus, AMD (at least) had a 5V DX2 80 cpu. Beyond that, you'd need 3V support or an overdrive processor.

If you look at the cpu in there, it's likely an IBM Blue Lightning DX2 (Cyrix design).

I've seen old Model Ms going for the same price as new Unicomp boards, for what it's worth.

I would go with Unicomp. You have to be really lucky these days to to get a vintage used model M at a price that, IMHO, is not eye-watering.

Are they still built to the same quality? That tooling must be pretty long in the tooth by now

As for the PS/ValuePoint itself, some links that may be useful: PS/ValuePoint drivers (or here). s61g1423.pdf is the Hardware Maintenance Manual and there is a full index of all the drivers and other files in that directory below:

I have a PS/2 variant of the "New" Model M. Other than the dark color scheme (Black case, silver keys), it looks and feels a lot more like an original Model M than Unicomp's previous models. I'm not sure if it's because it's a PS/2 version, but mine even has the traditional green leds instead of the blue leds that usually come with them.

Actually funnily enough the tech guy started it and kept it going 🤣. He likely at first was seeing if I was someone probably trying to make a quick buck scraping it for parts individually selling or to scrap for gold or something. But after I think he realized he didn't plan that he got more interested asking me like what games I played or planned to play, what I planned to do with it for upgrades etc 🤣 so really I feel the discount was more of being glad its going to a good home and going to get some useful loving and use.

As for the PS/ValuePoint itself, some links that may be useful: PS/ValuePoint drivers (or here). s61g1423.pdf is the Hardware Maintenance Manual and there is a full index of all the drivers and other files in that directory below:

Hey thanks David! I netted the bios update I needed off here for y2k and got the S3 drivers for dos I was struggling to find. Thanks for the help! I'm still confused though exactly dram chip for another 1mb of video memory, and more cache chips i need to get. I googled the parts numbers but I was only finding pdfs listing them, not the chips themselves. Which is sad 🙁

If the board supports a 40MHz bus, AMD (at least) had a 5V DX2 80 cpu. Beyond that, you'd need 3V support or an overdrive processor.

If you look at the cpu in there, it's likely an IBM Blue Lightning DX2 (Cyrix design).

By the way, Unicomp still offers beige model M ("Classic") keyboards that are derived from the keyboard design that would have shipped with this machine and made on the same machinery (spinoff from IBM/Lexmark).
Or you could go hunting down a used model M.

I've seen old Model Ms going for the same price as new Unicomp boards, for what it's worth.

Well from googling around on this exact model it seems my best bet without going stupidly crazy on price for a Cyrix is the AMD 5x86-100 or the same but 133. I've seen a few of these both on ebay atm for 30-60 bucks so probably will look into those at some point once I find a motherboard jumper settings to make it happen.

I'm actually using just a more modern ps/2 keyboard/mouse those being era specific arent a big deal for me same for the monitor (i'm using a flatscreen LCD that works just fine at the 800x600 resolution atm) keeps the bulky crts from taking up my desk 🤣

Only real problem I've found actually after digging into it a bit more is the case is a bit worn/flexed from age. So when you remove the top cover to access the inside and go to put it back on its almost impossible to line it up on the rails to get a proper secure latch, so its a bit of an annoyance there but I can manage 🤣

My story is pretty much the same . For a while I held on to my Packard Bell nostalgia (love the brand for all its glorious imperfection) and ended up buying multiple cheaper and more available (i.e. newer) Packard Bell systems, which didn't quite scratch my 486-era itch. Also time and money spent probably exceeded similar 550 ebay deals that I was looking at at that time. Anyway, no regrets. But your approach to switch brands seems to me entirely more practical. You did good, may it bring you lots of retro joy 😀
