So I have an old Gateway, my Win98SE system, that I want to upgrade for gaming. My most demanding game recommends a P4 or equivalent 1.6ghz processor. what I have is an AMD Athlon 850mhz which is barely minimum spec for the game. Im curious if theres a possible upgrade that can be swapped in?

Its a Slot A board, chipset is AMD-756ACD 9937CQC. Id like to do a video card and memory upgrade also down the line, I think this is the better place to start atm.

Thanks for the help as always!

The best CPU would be the 1 GHz Orion or Thunderbird, both are supported by the chipset, but a BIOS update might be required.

However, I would say that the extra 150 MHz wouldn't be very noticable I'm afraid... And don't look at the absurd prices asked on eBay...

For a VGA card, see if you can get a GF4 MX440 or a Radeon 9000 or 9200 for cheap. Or hunt a more exclusive GF3 or 8500 down. 😉

i386 16 ⇒ i486 DX4 100 ⇒ Pentium MMX 200 ⇒ Athlon Orion 700 | TB 1000 ⇒ AthlonXP 1700+ ⇒ Opteron 165 ⇒ Dual Opteron 856

I previously had an 8500 LE id bought a month and a half ago, that kicked the bucket shortly after. Its running on a Geforce TNT 2 i think atm, not near enough card for the games. If i could do a socket 370 conversion, I wonder what processors could work then? Ive seen some people use those little conversion boards

Maybe you can design one. Never seen one, I doubt they exist.

Slot A is just a reversed Slot 1 connector, and the 750 chipset supports an Athlon 1400B... 😉

This is the only picture I could find. Never went in mass production. It was from NMC-PC.

I've a Slot A PC with a 600Mhz CPU. I'd love to upgrade as already own a number of Slot 1 rigs stuck at 600Mhz but cant justify the cost of the higher end Slot A CPU's.

Slot A isn't that common, even AMD ditched the platform pretty quickly. I'd just enjoy the PC for lower end 9x and even dos gaming if that interests you.
