For games of this era more core are likely to cause problems not help.

What era ? The games mentioned by others are much newer than what I play on it and have never had an issue.. I guess if I played early Win95 games on it then I could but I also have run old Aldus PageMaker 4 and other old apps on that box recently w/o a problem ( I run 32bit which is more backward compatible (64bit versions are not))....

Need for Speed Underground 2 crashes on quad cores. That's a 2004 XP era game. Though you can set the CPU affinity.

You sure about that? I know for a fact Generals ZH works fine on a hexacore Ryzen, as I played it last week. Haven't touched the original Generals for a long time, but definitely played it on dualcores and most likely on my old i7-860 quadcore as well.

Yes im pretty sure as I disabled cores in task manager to run generals , it was original version without any patches I believe.

What a surprise - the two games listed here are EA products. EA seems to have more problems with forward compatibility than... a lot... of other game developers.

Interesting ! I have played C&C Tiberian Sun (original from about 1999) and lots of BF1942 and Vietnam (2002 and 2004 iirc) with out issues on mine but have never played with the affinities except for testing purposes.

Hate posting a reply and then have to edit it because it made no sense 😁 First computer was an IBM 3270 workstation with CGA monitor. Stuff: https://archive.org/details/@horun

Funny thing is, the one before (Underground 1) and the one after (Most Wanted) has no issues on quad cores. Well, U1 runs too fast without Vsync and the controls become oversensitive, but otherwise it doesn't care.

Early versions of 3DMark also have issues on multiprocessor systems. I've found patches through the Vogons community.

Still, I don't think XP causes these issues. XP can handle multiprocessing quite well. The apps have the problem.

If anything, MS realized and addressed these issues early on with "Compatibility Mode" to aid users to resolve problems with errant software.
