Hi, just an idea...
I got a SL28Q CPU from an old Compaq Armada MB (see here at the bottom of page) http://www.cpu-collection.de/?l0=co&l1=Intel&l2=Pentium+MMX
Not a module but just a bare CPU that was directly soldered on MB. It's very fine pitch quad SMD chip that is pretty useless itself but I'm thinking about reusing it in socket 7 via some interposer board. I know there exist some chinese fake MMX 300MHz CPU that already did the job but seems to be rare. I'd like to know first if someone else didn't try to replicate it with his own interposer. If not, maybe I could design it myself, hoping cheap 4-layer JLCPCB board would be enough to route it all out...

I made a thread about this a while back, new golden tigers or something rather. Can’t find it.

In any case, soldering those film roll chips would be an absolute nightmare.

I’m not sure if the full laptop module could be adapted either. The connections here are very small. Would take a lot of skill and special equipment to make.

Just trying to fix pins on the intel ones I have is very difficult and requires a microscope, let alone building one. Maybe with more skill than I and special equipment like a microscope soldering station but it is beyond the ability of a typical enthusiast it seems

I belive that soldering could be done with good flux and some magnifier, I can use Mantis 10x stereo scope at work. Datasheet drawing shows the pin width is 100um, 250um pitch - JLCPCB should make it. If the chip is the same as used in PGA package then wiring should be straightforward (as bonding in the PGA chip)...

Do you have a pinout of the film roll package?

Pinouts of the pga is easy enough to find.

To answer your question, I could probably design one but would need a datasheet for the film roll packages.

Intel made these, I have two of them.

We just have to replicate them.

Can’t do it without the film chip datasheet though.

Yes I have a datasheet titled "MOBILE PENTIUM® PROCESSOR WITH MMX™ TECHNOLOGY" that covers 133-166MHz with both packages.

Adapter above - pretty simple, I guess the same is in chinese gold CPU. Maybe a version could be made with integrated LDO for MBs without low-enough VRM but there would be cooling problem, LDO would need to be placed on some side extending the interposer and could cause spacing issues... so rather do VRM mod on MB and keep interposer simple...
As a source of pins I could use some useless Celeron PPGA370...
just thinking...

Are the pin outs the same between non tilly MMX and Tillamook ? Didnt Intel add more pin outs that changed how Tillamook interacts with L2 cache?

Dunno, need to compare. I found a better datasheet covering 166-266MHz

I have a feeling you may need to source a datasheet for Tillamook specifically, from other threads here on Vogons there are a number of pin changes between Tilamook and earlier MMX Pentiums aside from lower voltages.

I can’t trust that the p55c variant is the same as the tillamook package. We need to find the tillamook datasheet.

There are some tillamook mods I can incorporate, but adding a vrm (overdrive) seems unnecessary. There is already a interposer that can do this.

That looks like the right one.

Can someone re host it here? For future searchers (I’m on my phone)

Socket 5-7-SS7 (Processor Imposter) Tweaker For Dual Socket Motherboards (released)

I’ll probably use this as a edge cut template,

Probably going to have to build the smd footprint from the datasheet

I could create footprints in Altium quite easily via package generator, then careful looking at pin tables will be needed to make netlist directly or sch. parts...

Got boring white walls in my computer corner. Would it be possible to upload this pic in some insane resolution, suitable for printing? 😀

Can that import to kicad? If I am to help, (am I?) it is what I will use. But if you are gonna do it all yourself, I will watch with interest 😀

Here's best I have, I used Pentax 17-70/f4 lens that works as good macro lens allowing focus from 8-10cm distance.

For those who aren’t holding one of these in your hand it is positively nuts how small those legs/pins are. Best of luck to the poor soul that tries to assemble one of these
