As the title says, i recently got my hands on the PIII-S of 1.4 and just today i bought a compaq presario 5000 (model 5315) with the mighty TR100 motherboard (s370, tualatin support, i815ep chipset iirc) and honestly i have no idea which gpu could be the best suited for the cpu and system/s i want to use with said pc (Win98se and maybe a dualboot with either WinXp or 2000).

For reference, the machine will also be paired with a 2.0 usb card, a sound card (idk wich one but im between an Aureal Vortex 2 or Sb Live!), and a 3com nic, also with sd-ide storage.
I mostly want to play with very late 90s games and newer ones targeted to newer systems, such as Call of Duty 1, GTA Vice City, C&C Generals, etc

The current ones i have ond disposal for this are:
- Geforce 6200 (256mb and the 512mb)
- Geforce FX 5200 (128mb)
- Geforce FX 5200 Pci (128mb)
- Geforce FX 5500 (256mb)
- Geforce MX 440 (64mb)
- Geforce MX 4000 (64mb)
- Radeon 7000 (?)
- Radeon 9550 (256mb)

I have other cards such as an Matrox G450 and a Voodoo 3 3000 but those may fit beter in an older system like my p3 600 slot 1 machine (talking about the voodoo) rather than the Tualatin

Im open to suggestions, i want to use something cheap for the time being, but fast enough to make the tualatin shine

Also, i found this reference for the mobo: https://theretroweb.com/motherboards/s/lite-on-tr100

Cheap but fast how about a nice GeForce4 Ti4200 ?

I have found that anything faster quickly gets bottlenecked by other factors, namely bus speed, slow ram and the simple fact that even a 1.4s can’t feed the GPU fast enough.

The FX5500 would also be ok here too.

Id' go with the Radeon 9550.

I have a 9600XT in my Tualatin system and it handles everything I throw at it with amazing FPS. It also runs very cool which some of these GeForce cards won't.

If you get a Zalman ZM80D-HP and slap that baby on the Radeon you can do a silent setup. 🥰

I second that.

Out of those you have, probably GeForce 6200 and Radeon 9550.
As already recommended, GeForce4 Ti would fit nice and is period-correct and cheap. I would also add GeForce3, which is P3 period-correct.
Obtainable performance options: Radeon 9600 variants (Pro / XT), Radeon 9500Pro, GeForce FX5900(XT), Radeon 9700TX (Dell OEM).

Avoid GeForce 6200 as it requires too new driver. Geforce FX (except for 5700) is the last series you want for Windows 98 as it works with 53.04 which is very compatible with old games unlike later drivers. I would recommend FX5600 as it's quite cheap and has sufficient performance for games up to 2004 with Tualatin 1.4Ghz.

3D Mark 99

  • FX5600, PIII 900 - 6397
  • FX5600, Athlon 64 3400+ - 9463

3D Mark 2000

  • FX5600, PIII 900 - 5980
  • FX5600, Athlon 64 3400+ - 7176

3D Mark 2001

  • FX5600, PIII 900 - 4981
  • FX5600, Athlon 64 3400+ - 8548

With Tualatin 1.4Ghz, you should be getting performance somewhere between PIII 900 and Athlon 64 3400+. There are faster FX cards out there but those are rare and very expensive. Those are unnecessary for Windows 98 or early Windows XP games.

FX5600 + PIII900 is sufficient for games up to 2002. Since you have FX5500 already, I would use that until you find a cheap better card.

Pentium III 900E, ECS P6BXT-A+, 384MB RAM, NVIDIA GeForce FX 5600 128MB, Voodoo 2 12MB, 80GB HDD, Yamaha SM718 ISA, 19" AOC 9GlrA
Athlon 64 3400+, MSI K8T Neo V, 1GB RAM, NVIDIA GeForce 7600GT 512MB, 250GB HDD, Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ZS

considering 9600 pro/tx are $20 I would forget all the junk low end cards you listed

Thanks guys, I'm going to use the 9550 for now. After figuring out which one is the most available (locally) and which one suits my machine best, I bought a 9600 pro (coming next week), they aren't that expensive where I live and they are more widely available than anything from nvidia similar performance

Bad news, the P3 Tualatin 1.4ghz doesnt work with the TR100 Motherboard but works with a cheap Via PLE133 board that i use for tests. Also, the TR100 came with a Tualatin Celeron 1.2ghz and works fine with that processor, so i guess is a problem related to a bios update. Someone knows were i can get a bios to allow compatibility with the P3-S?

It doesn't work with AMI Bios but somehow i managed to get the correct softpaq from DriversCollection (it had the 1.11 rom version from june 2002, and the newer Tualatin micrododes!) and now it works just fine

Just in case, i will post here the softpaq that worked for me (it uses the Compaq flash utility, so it needs to run under windows environment). The installer said to work with any 686P9 rom but obviously i only tested it with my TR100 Motherboard in my Compaq 5315LA system
(Series 5000 ----> 5300)

PS: I added some images from the process too 😀
