Today I got a nice computer (then maybe I will post some photos) is an IBM Pentium 60 with S3 onboard video card. The problem is that it has graphics artifacts on the screen, which doesn't happen if I insert a PCI graphics card into a slot. I thought of 3 alternatives: video card ram failure, ramdac failure, s3 chip failure… what can it be in your opinion?

Could be ram, if added, replace with another pair. If the problem still, it is the pair of soldered down memory ICs for the S3.

jailbars is usually ram.

The motherboard has two soldered chips and two sockets. If I desold the two chips, and to test I put two more in the empty sockets, does it work? without welding them in place of the two that I took off. or does it necessarily need the two chips soldered before inserting two more in the sockets?

afaik it needs them in original spot
before desoldering try pushing on the S3 and ram chips (firm push with a finger, discharge yourself to the case first) and seeing if anything changes

No, needs t0 be 256k x 16 bits SOJ 40 pins IC. Please provide pictures of S3's memory chips markings.

It’s most likely a bad solder joint on a video ram chip. If it was the Graphics chip you would not have any picture.
I would forget about fixing it and just use PCI Graphics card.

You can get a PCI graphics card with the same S3 chip or a better one.

What operating system do you want to run and what games do you want to play ?
For basic DOS games the “S3 trio64” is popular and the “S3 trio64 DX” for 3D support.
These are very popular and work out of the box. Plug-n-play.

These will play 90% of games and run most programs.

That's fast page mode, 60ns. Get two and have someone who have hot air station replace them for you.

Buy from non-chinese sellers:

This one has more than qty of 10, you could buy 4 and have someone solder it in and plug the other two in these socket for matched set is a suggestion.

It's a Pentium60 Computer, it's just "like to have" and for the same reason i like to have it full working in original configuration, i will try some DOS games (i have also a 486 DX4 and Pentium from 75 to 233MMX plus a P4 for cover ALL). I lke to fix it, is not a big problem to swap rhe chip, hard will be find it.

I have found two of this... are useful?

The digit "8" in the end indicates 80ns. I would recommend against soldering those to the board as replacement.
