Hi,

I have a Compaq Contura Aero 4/25 and I'm unable to boot using a CF-IDE adapter.
The HDD in this machine was a Quantum Daytona that broke because of melting rubber and now I'm trying to use an no-name generic CF-IDE adapter to boot.
The adapter works fine with another Pentium 430tx machine.
The Aero I guess is trying to guess the drive geometry and fails. From what I understood there is no way to go into the BIOS and change the Drive Type (there is no interactive BIOS).
With the 2GB card, that boots fine in the 430tx, it says 'Disk I/O error'.
With a Cannon 16Mb card it says 'Missing operating system'.

I guess the Cannon would be a better candidate. But I think Aero detected a different geometry then the system where I formated sys'ed the card ( MS-DOS in VirtualBox + Direct Disc Access + USB to IDE adapter).
I also want to add that I have no other ways to boot the Aero so I can initialise the drive as it is.

So my questions are:
- Is there a way to force a certain geometry on a CF card so I can format it in a way that aero can boot ?
- What else can I try ( different CF ? Different HDD's ? )

Thank you

It seems that the MBR is being read.
For example i've tried mbr-boot-manager boot manager from github with the Cannon 16Mb card.

But I get "Boot sector error"

If you can't do an option rom like SIIG enhanced BIOS or XT IDE Universal Bios, I'd try EZ drive 9.03w (if you are running a Fat 16 system like Win95 or older), or EZ drive 9.09w (if you are using Win95 OSR2 or newer).

Works with standard partition types and autodetects your drive's geometry.

When you do the install, it should set up your MBR and boot sector for you.

Finally I found a card that worked: SanDisk 512Mb C 993 H16 S63.
This card's geometry, compared to the others, was detected the same on all other systems (osX's fdisk / usb reader, bios of 430tx using ide-cf) and it worked on the Compaq without DDO.
To test the card I have created an image using dd loaded the image in 86box using the proper CHS. Formated the card and installed DOS6.11 inside 86box.
Now I'm restoring the system inside 86box using this disk images https://archive.org/details/contura-aero-syst … m-image-back-up.
