hello guys. I've acquired a 286 and 386 PC. after connecting them to my Pentium1 PSU, they both boots up.
so today I bought another two AT psu, and both cannot be used.
years ago, I've tried a modern ATX PSU with ATX-to-AT cable, and it blew up in smoke.

These two vintage computers are my dream come true, but it is near impossible to get good quality AT PSU.
what are my choices?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

I didn't have any issue using an ATX-to-AT cable either, even mine has an adapter for -5V which is no longer available.

ok guys. I've orderd the ATX-AT cable , and a modern quality ATX PSU.
When it arrives, I will connect them but won't switch on until I post photos first.

Now, can I re-use the original switch on the AT case ? The AT case switch is
Black-White
Brown Blue

the adapter cable has only Green and Black

Yes, just use two of the plugs on the switch

by the way be sure to order the adapter that has the long wires for that switch I don’t know what they were thinking making an adapter That has short wires.

On the motherboard black to black

or you can just short the green/white and use the switch on the back of the PSU

Thanks! Can you elaborate? The adapter cable has black and green only.

For the 4 cables on the switch, i just unplug and throw them away?

Yea i meant black/green sorry. Solder them together or use some sort of other method to keep them reliably shorted

However, since you have the AT switch already there, it would probably be best to at least try using two of the 4x leads instead, i am not sure it matters which pair you use for the adapter, but I guess i'd test the black/white first.

FYI you can test this without connecting the motherboard, just see if the PSU fan kicks on and you know it worked

This is how connector should be pluged into the MBO (black wires in the middle):

And this is switch side:

Basically, you connect one half of the switch in any order. There are just 2 wires.
Just mesured lenght of the switch wires, it's 75cm (~30 in).
You dont have to plug into the motherbord to test if PSU starts.

Hello guys it is me again. I’ve ordered an atx psu and atx-at cable. Not yet arrived

Today I saw a youtube video. A guy demonstrated that his 286 computer has a capacitor hooked up to -5v rail.

Does that mean those kinds of mobo cannot use ATX-AT cable that has no -5v supply?

They can, you just cannot use some old sound cards that require -5V:
ISA Cards & Devices Requiring -5V

Since target platforms are 286 and 386, you might be affected.

You can also look into:

The adapter I posted above deals with the -5v issue

Most motherboards will work without it. I believe it is some sound cards that really need it.

I've been curious for a while if these are legit: https://www.amazon.com/ATHENA-SUPPLY-Athena-C … 43SQ/ref=sr_1_2

I haven't actually needed one, since my retro rig is a Compaq that takes a Compaq PSU, but apparently they are new-built PC AT PSUs.

I purchased one of those a few years ago when it was at a slightly cheaper price and it has been working fine with my test bench PC.
