Onboard ESS 1869 on my Compaq Presario 5170. I’ve had this computer for a couple of decades, and this has only suddenly started. Volume goes up, but then volume falls down on its own. Happens on W95 with installed drivers found on VogonsDrivers, W98SE native drivers, and W2K. Standard speakers connected via non-amplified line-out, and standard PS/2 keyboard directly connected, so no weird multimedia button nonsense going on. The only recent hardware change was swapping the dying CD drive for a DVD drive; the original 40-pin ribbon cable and audio cable were retained.

Bump. I went ahead and disabled the related hardware entries in device manager on W98SE through safe mode and installed an SB0090 Audigy; with just this sound card enabled on this OS, I’m having no volume issues. Suggests to me that even though the volume control behavior is showing in software, it’s not some mystery keyboard misinput and may be originating at hardware level?

ES1869 has VOLDN/VOLUP pins for volume buttons...
I guess there's no such buttons on that Compaq Presario, but maybe there's some short circuit somewhere?
