Greetings to Vogons people.

I've bought an ASUS V9999GT/TD/256M/A AGP 8X, a GeForce 6800 GT graphics card for my Win98SE system.

I tried few drivers, but it seems the system isn't really running in a stable form.

Most of Fifa games have glitches and crashes. (Fifa 2002 doesn't run at all, 2004 and 2005 have glitches), I first thought the card is probably bad/corrupted, but 3D Mark 01 works fine and the card passes all its steps without any problem/crash/glitch.

Could you please suggest me what driver should I install, to have at least a painless Win98 system with that card?

What is the best-possible driver for that card on Win98SE, and is there any unofficial/tweaked driver for GeForce 6800 GT series?

I really need your ideas.
Many thanks!

i ran a Galaxy GeForce 6800 XT on windows 98se with the last NVIDIA drivers and it work just fine.

have u tired the card in another system.

i know i had a radon 9700 pro at one point card did not artifact u could install the drivers no problem u could run a game in get though menus fine but as soon as the game got running it would lock up with in no time.

trying in another system would best bet first. if it don't work in the other system u know the card is bad if it does work in another system then u need to start checking stuff on the system with the problem clean the agp slot try another psu reinstall windows run the ram though memtest.

Hello again,

@cyclone3d - System specs:

Asus P5PE-VM Intel 865G Intel ICH5 Motherboard
Intel Core 2 Duo E4700 2.60 Ghz CPU
1x512 MB DDR 400 Mhz CL 2.5 RAM
PSU: FSP H3-550 HYPER 80+ PRO 550 W (1 month-old PSU)

@smtkr - Drivers I tried: 61.76, 66.94 (Both give BSOD) Now I'm trying: 71.84, but it seems it gives artifacts as well.

@aaron158 - What driver have you run exactly? No, I haven't tried the card in another system, I have no more AGP system here, unfortunately, but I can try it with Windows XP and its latest drivers to see if the same happens under XP as well.

"then u need to start checking stuff on the system with the problem clean the agp slot try another psu reinstall windows run the ram though memtest." - good suggestions.. Thanks.

But overall, it seems such cards are very problematic under Windows 98? Too many forum posts here related..

I've played around with a PCIE GeForce 6800 GS on Windows 98, and I found it too unstable for my taste regardless of which driver version I use.

I prefer my PCIE Radeon x800 XL with Windows 98. It's much more stable with the latest drivers, and it performs better as well. You can get an AGP version, but it looks like they run a bit over $100 US on eBay.

My 6800 GS works great with Windows NT 4.0 on the other hand, so I do have a practical use for it.

Updated DirectX ?
You could also try the moded 82.69 driver.
GART/AGP 2x/SBA enabled/disabled ?

DirectX is latest supported one for Win98SE. 2006-December.

GART or SBA - I don't really know about them? AGP is running at 8x.

And fosterwjo3, it's already an AGP card as I mentioned earlier.

Hello mate,

A bit dumb question but why do you use windows 98 instead xp ? Fifa 02 -05 is xp Era games so you can run those under xp with no issues . As for 98 se it might be directx conflict or driver or both or else

DOS: 166mmx/16mb/Y719/S3virge
DOS/95: PII333/128mb/AWE64/TNT2M64
Win98: P3_900/256mb/SB live/3dfx V3
Win Me: Athlon 1700+/512mb/Audigy2/Geforce 3Ti200
Win XP: E8600/4096mb/SB X-fi/HD6850

Hi ciornyi, I actually try to have an ultimate, a monster Win98SE. Fifa 05 is officially supported by Windows 98 as well, but it was just an example. The glitches and artifacts are randomly on few games I tried.
But dxdiag tests (Direct 3D 8, 9) and 3D Mark 01 tests are correctly displayed.
*confused*

Nvidia 6xxx series cards are not a great choice for that. Even if these cards work correctly (e.g. there are no hardware issues) many older Win9x games will have problems due to newer drivers which are needed. Generally speaking, any Nvidia driver newer than 45.23 becomes problematic in some way, under Win9x.

If you want the highest Win9x performance while still remaining mostly compatible, go for a Radeon X850XT Platinum Edition card. Alternatively, for a bit more compatibility but less performance, a GeForce FX 5900 card is ok, since it can still take 45.23 drivers.
