I would like to list what I have at the moment:
1) VLB with UMC 82C871F
pictures can be found here:
Re: 3 (+3 more) retro battle stations
with most aggressive timings max 4MB/s. No speed gain by IDE XT Bios. I am curious, what drivers should be used with that.
2) VLB with QD 6580W chip.
Very nice, because it is supported by XT IDE Bios. Speed ~8MB/s.
3) VLB Side Jr. Plus - with Appian ADI/s chip and a BIOS on the card. Should do ~10MB/s.
I can add pictures of the card, if somebody wants to have it, but I think it is well known here.
Bios controlled Controller, but I have big problems with it.
Bios of the controller does not overcome 8GB limit (XT IDE does).
I was unable to run it with a compact flash adapter and 16GB card. Always unstable (also with 8GB or 7.5GB only). Tried card BIOS, Card Bios + XT IDE Bios.
Also problems with a normal Seagate 6GB IDE harddisk. Very disappointing. Never managed to do a Windows 98 installation with this controller. Maybe I should disable the Bios completely and try with a driver?
But the Bios controlls enabling/disabling of serial, parallel devices and floppy.

Appian ADI/2 and many other drivers were attached in previous posts.

Thanks again for your help.
I put the TurboIDE Appian drivers you attached to your post here: http://www.vogonsdrivers.com/getfile.php?file … &menustate=55,0
I put IWill SIDEjr VL-Bus Fast IDE V1.4a drivers here: http://www.vogonsdrivers.com/getfile.php?file … &menustate=55,0
I put the Future Domain Power IDE! driver stack here: http://www.vogonsdrivers.com/getfile.php?file … &menustate=55,0

I pulled out the ADI/2 based controller that I have:

Here's how the build is going:

  • Win98se just installed the standard HD controller.
  • The TurboIDE driver didn't recognize the card.
  • The IWill SIDEjr VL-Bus Fast IDE V1.4a driver recognized the card but doesn't see the 512MB CF attached to it and won't load on boot.
  • The diagnostic that comes with the Future Domain drivers sees the card and the hard drive, but the PwrIDE! installer seems fussy about installing under Win98se, so I'll have to get back to that tomorrow. Looks like I need to manually put ATASPI16.SYS and FDATAHD.SYS in the config.sys if I want to use it under DOS.

Here are results from my system with Iwill Jr. Plus + 16GB compact flash card.
I wrote before I cannot install Windows 98 with this controller.
I solved it by disabling (!) the Jr. Bios with dip-switches + XT-Ide (for 16GB support).

I used for a quick check speedsys buffered read speed in kBytes per second / linear read speed in kBytes per second.
without drivers: 1800 / 1800. That is super slow.
Turbo IDE driver did not recognize the card, manual putting the sys to config.sys does not help => no compatible card found. So like your result.
IWill Fast IDE 1.4a driver: 7200 / 4600 => best result!
Adaptec Flex-Driver: 6100 / 4300.
Future Domain driver: Also similar to your result: System says Windows 95 detected, refuses to install the dos driver. Solved by booting from floppy disk. Then it cannot find the compatible chip, but still 2 driver lines ATASPI16.SYS and FDATAHD.SYS are installed. => 1800 / 1800. So useless, same super slow result like without driver.

EDIT:
With the QD 6580W and XT Ide I get 6700 / 5700. So not 8MB/s as I wrote above. But still: I will continue using that, most easy setup (no additional driver needed).

Nice! Are there any runtime switches you can try to up the speed? Sometimes you can try to force a little more speed, but you run the risk of failing I/O.

Can anyone see if they can extract the files from this program?

When I try to run it with a 1.44 floppy drive, it throws an error writing the first sector.

7zip opens the file just normally and it seems to contain two 720K disk images.

edit: only one disk image. somehow 7zip shows twice the same filename yet the second gives an error on opening.

edit2: attached zip file

Thanks for your help. I tried renaming it to .zip and opening it in Windows, but that must have been an ARJ or something.

I got the zip file uploaded.

I also had another old driver from a DTK board with a Winbond chip and a Tekram driver that was in the same format.

I saw this chip on a VSI-PV1 VLB board for sale on ebay:

Would the manufacturer be VIC and the part number HAOI-0221 ?

After looking at the driver-- I think it VIC is a chip made by Opti

That might have been their first chip. Maybe VIC = "Vesa IDE Controller"

This would be the second via chip from a couple years later:

I played around.
Maximum I can achieve is (done inside the GUI of the driver that opens with F10)
Read Timing Reg 22
Write Timing Reg 22
=> ~8000 kBytes /s buffered read / ~4900 kBytes/s linear read speed, so 7200 / 4600 seem to be the values for 33.
That's the maximum for my setup, I am quite sure.

stumbled upon this http://brassicgamer.blogspot.com/2023/04/the- … -dx266.html#ide brassicGamer tests 500MB disk on period correct hardware. Good variety of testing programs, interesting caching VLB controller results. Wonder how credible are those cache gains in real world use.

I found a DOS/Win3.1 driver for a UMC UM82C871 controller chip. There's also a BIOS image included.

That's an old one! Thanks, we didn't have any UM82C871 drivers archived yet.

This sys dos driver does not work for me (with Compact flash card). It says harddisk error.

So, I've had this card for a while, model "VLSIO2C3" and unknown brand/manufacturer. It's a VLB controller that uses Goldstar Prime2C for the Multi I/O and an "ADD2" chip for IDE:

Since there is not much to be found in the Internet about it, here's the jumper settings which I managed to determine by poking around with a multimeter and comparing with an ISA Prime2C card (the IRQ selection jumper block is kind of obvious so I'm only including the jumpers that are not documented on the silkscreen):

    | 1-2 | 2-3
---------------------------------------------------
JP1 | PTR is set to LPT1 | PTR is set to LPT2
JP2 | ASYNC1 enabled | ASYNC1 disabled
JP3 | FDC is set to primary | FDC is set to secondary
JP4 | ASYNC2 is set to COM2 | ASYNC2 is set to COM4
JP5 | ASYNC1 is set to COM1 | ASYNC1 is set to COM3
JP6 | FDC enabled | FDC disabled
JP7 | Game port enabled | Game port disabled
JP8 | ASYNC2 enabled | ASYNC2 disabled
JP9 | PTR enabled | PTR disabled

JP38 | ON | OFF
-------------------------
IDE | Enabled | Disabled

NOTE: the game port connector has only 10 pins (?!?!). Not sure if I've ever seen a DB15 to IDC10 breakout cable so I have no idea what the pinout would be.

I also have the drivers, which I am attaching to this post. I tried them a while back but I don't remember how much difference they made, one of these days I will give it another go and post the results here.

Likely that's one of the cost-reduced cards that only support a single joystick (two axes) instead of two joysticks (four axes). You also need a timing capacitor per axis, and it seems the two(!) timing capacitors are C9 and C10 (labelled "2x 103"), which also hints to a single-joystick game port. At the time these controllers were sold, most people that played games already had a sound card with a proper two-joystick game post, so multi-I/O-card vendors often got around with just providing support for a single joystick.

Has anyone noticed that having the UM8672 in your system means you must run your cache at 3-2-2-2, even at 33 MHz and regardless of the speed of your cache chips? I've noticed on this on both UM491 and UM498 boards.

What symptoms do you experience when you run your motherboard cache at reduced wait states with a UM8672 IDE controller installed?
