Hi, what's the meaning of the Message "No record found cylinder 147, head 1, sector 24" while "initializing cylinder 147, head 1. ESC to cancel" in western digital disk Manager Version 6.03a (c) ontrack 1985-1995 during Low Level Format?

It comes on nearly every sector. Maybe 15-20 of 26 each head per cylinder, despite setting other values for interleave (1-7).

I'm currently trying to format a Seagate ST-238R RLL hard Disk, because the computer doesn't recognize the disk and throws a hard Disk error message. Either press F1 to continue or F2 to enter BIOS Setup. I already gave in the exact CHS and WPC and LZ values.

I think, the actuator might be defective. Or the head isn't able to write and magnetize the platters. Because a reading verification passes through, but at initializing llfmt it gets write errors. The controller works with a NEC D5126. It's a wd1006V-MM2 in my Unisys pw² 500 16A 386sx.

Messages after low level initializing

Also other llfmt tools like sgatfmt3, Unisys llfmt or optune are failing.

WD1006V-MM2 is MFM, not RLL.
You can use an RLL drive with an MFM controller, but with limited capacity - 17 sectors/track, instead of 26.

Okay, I'll look then for another controller. For the meaning of the message, I found, on verify it came directly before the error message that the flaw map is full. So it's the error. Because of the configuration for RLL with sector count 26 instead of 17, it must fail. Thank you, for pointing that out!

I got also a 1006v-SR2 and currently trying to format that drive with sgatfmt3.

The Diskmanager seems not to accept the RLL Seagate Drive, due to licensing for western digital. With MFM I was able to set skew etc. Values and it set automatic values.

With rll it showed only interleave 1 and all other settings N/A. I was not able to change the interleave.

An other Seagate ST-277R wasn't formatable at all, due to write errors (the dreaded a)bort r)entry I)gore).

The ST-238R now is under processing.

But it throws on each cylinder/head a format error!, Format retry, drive 0 recall error! Estimated time is 3h8m.

So I assume, the both drives are dead anyway.

The preferred LLF utility is the one shipped with controller's BIOS - try something like "g=cc00:5" in DEBUG.
Also, double check stuff like jumper settings and termination.

There is a jumper next to the data cable. I assume, it's for selecting as drive 0. Also the resistor for termination is attached.

But yes. For the ST-277R I've forgotten the terminator. 🙁

The 386 doesn't come with a BIOS for Low Level format the drives. The wd1002a-27x seems to be broken. The chip wd11c00 WD '85 gets very hot and the 8088 no longer boots with the card attached to the DTK turbo 10 board (no video output, memory test is acoustically noticable).

So my option to use WD super Format 2.4 with debug G=c800:5 is no longer given.

I thought sgatfmt3 would be a good replacement, though.

WD 1006V-SR2 comes with BIOS and LLF utility - https://www.manualslib.com/manual/534920/West … d1006v-Sr1.html
Make sure the BIOS is enabled - see jumper settings.

Indeed, that card comes with BIOS. Now it's low level formatting that drive, with no messages other than progress (slow).

So thanks for pointing me into the right direction, guys! (Also in the other threads. But here particularly Grzyb) I really appreciate that! I'm not sure, If my english understanding is good enough for everything I face with this kinda new hobby.

FYI. it can't output to device PRN which is kinda an alias for LPT1 or the device to which a printer should/could be attached.
The error message has nothing to do with the hard drive, just the program unable to output data to the printer for some reason.

Right to repair is fundamental. You own it, you're allowed to fix it.

Okay, so it wants to print to the prn device (printer, I guess in Unix lpr or lpt).

But the format and recall errors are related to the drive, at least I think so.

ah yes. I don't know the program you're using. you might as well use norton calibrate.
