Hello everyone,

I've recently purchased a retro PC:
Abit BH7-E motherboard
Celeron 2 Ghz
ATI Radeon 9600XT
Kingmax 1 Gb 400 DDR RAM

Everything is working fine, Win Xp Sp3 is running without problems. Then I wanted some improvement, and ordered a Pentium 4 2.4/1Mb/533 CPU, in allegedly working condition. I swapped the CPU-s and powered on the PC, but there was no POST (every moving part started to work, but no speaker beep and VGA signal). Swapped back to the Celeron, and everything working fine again.

I changed the CMOS battery and done a CMOS reset but nothing happened.

The CPU is officially supported by the motherboard. What could be the problem? (Mobo specifications says using DDR 400 means overclocked status, maybe I need to downgrade the RAM for using 533 FSB CPU?)

Thank your for your help!

WinXP PC - ABIT BH7, Pentium 4 2.4, 1 GB RAM, ATI Radeon 9600XT

dead cpu.

as in dead Pentium 4 2.4 CPU

or if you want a more hopeful reply,
It might just be that your motherboard needs a recap, due to the new p4-2.4 cpu requiring more power than the older celeron, which causes it to not boot with your current mainboard.

Right to repair is fundamental. You own it, you're allowed to fix it.

Could be dead CPU. I have a bunch of 2.4 and 2.8 chips here that are doornail levels of dead.

Okay, so as the cheapest solution I might get another P4 CPU (I got this for circa 9$) to check if the mobo is broken or not. Recapping could be more expensive then the whole mobo 😒

Or I accept my fate and use the Celeron 😀

You say you ordered a 533MHz part, but is that what arrived?

Totally, I checked the CPUs top.

If it has 1MB cache then it's a Prescott cpu which may not be compatible with this motherboard.
I checked the latest bios for this board and it only has cpu micro codes for northwood cpus:

you can pick one of the northwood cpus listed here: https://www.cpu-world.com/CPUs/Pentium_4/TYPE … 0Northwood.html
they have 512kb cache and the 3Ghz one ( SL6WK) has a reasonable price.

Wow. Thank you for this thorough answer. I'll check one of these CPUs 😀
