Hello all,

One of my favorite optical drives for mid nineties builds is the Mitsumi FX400 Quad speed drive. I love the silence of spinning and the funny seeking sounds. It was produced between ~1994 en ~1996. But there are quite some versions of this drive, and I wonder what the differences are. I have some of them but I wonder if one of you can shed some light on the characteristics of each version.

FX400
- initial production version from 1994
FX400A?
FX400B, FX400B2, FX400B4
FX410A, FX410A2
FX400C
- Have 2 of these - not tested yet
FX400C3 (IBM OEM)
- Has an anoying hi pitched tone while operating. Doesn't take certain CDRs as well, for example the Verbatim CD-R
FX400D, FX400D2
- does not read every CDR. Has read an old Philips CD-R without problems, but doesnt take a more modern Verbatim CD-R.
FX400E
- My favourite so far. Reads everything I have thrown at it.
FX400G

Please let me know your experiences. And feel free to add versions to to the list. It might not be complete.

Best regards, Arno
