PIII 450MHz + Voodoo 2 12mb seems balanced, if not even cpu-sided. But I've just found Geforce 2 MX 400 64MB for literally nothing and ordered it, should I expect a CPU bottleneck now?
I'm planning on trying out some 2000-2003 games with it, since on voodoo they'd probably do less than 15-20 fps.

Really funny how many people here are in similar boat at the moment.
I am about the make my first pc with a 440bx intel chipset, socket 1 and a cpu between 400 and 800mhz and the mx440 was recommended to me as potential card.

that is in almost exactly the same boat as you are and to him the mx 440 was also recommended.
I am not expert just a noob but If the gf4 mx440 is recommended for similar set ups than yours the gf2 mx 400 should be alright.

But yes I'd say its a perfect match. V2 SLI for Glide, and the GF2 MX for 2d/D3D
I tried this combination a few years ago. All CPUs work at 4.5 x100 = 450 mhz.
The table shows the results of Quake 1 in software V2 and GF mode.

Especially the later ones probably will not run well, but I have the P3 550MHz laying around, might finally change it and it should improve the situation

2000-2002 games require a faster CPU. My PIII 900E can handle them fine, but it isn't fast enough for 2003. You should also get at least GeForce 4 MX440 (128 bit version), not a GeForce 2 MX. FX5600 works too, but it may exhibit font defects in some games. PIII 800-900 are still plentiful.
Voodoo 2 is for 1997-1998. In 1999 Direct 3D support was more common or at least patches were provided. Once you try later games, you will completely forget about Voodoo 2 and 1997-1998.

I think I'll try to use a Slotket to get a socket 370 processor on board. The problem is I'm not confident it will work, as there's limited data on how they work - my board supports FSB 100 and it doesn't have even coppermine support, and I would like to try coppermine - will it work?

yay VT82C693, your computer is 30% slower than normal from the start thanks to chipset.
You can still stick 2MX in there, but your boards chipset has broken AGP support and you might experience instability (crashing unless switched to slower AGP mode or older nvidia drivers).
If you really want 2003 games look around for old brand name (that usually means Intel chipset) Pentium 4 office PC with AGP slot. Those are usually extremely cheap (throwaway value) and will deliver solid ~2005 performance.
I'm not really that much into it, I just want them to work, I'm mostly interested in 1996-2001 tbh so 2mx will probably do fine, but thanks for advice, maybe I'll buy one some day 😁
