I recently got an ECS K7VTA3 6.0 motherboard and it came with an AthlonXP 2100+ (Thoroughbred B core). The cooler is from Spire, but the fan is old and very noisy.

I'm thinking of reusing the existing heatsink and putting a Noctua NF-A8 FLX on that. Would that fan be able to properly cool this CPU at stock clocks? I don't plan on overclocking it.

I use a 60mm Noctua fan with an Athlon XP 2000+ and a copper heatsink. It cools it just fine.

Though cooling efficiency also depends on the rest of the case and how much overall airflow there is.

should be fine, especially for a cooler sized for an 80mm fan. i run an xp 2100 palomino at 1.825v fully overclocked with a solid copper heatsink originally sized for a 70mm fan--replaced with a thermally controlled 92mm fan which barely rises above the lowest rpm setting.

Thanks guys!

BTW, I just remembered that I had a spare DeepCool Ice Edge Mini cooler in storage. Of course, I can't use that heatsink on this motherboard, but I checked the fan dimensions and it's 80 mm. Mounted that fan on top of the Spire heatsink and it seems to be running fine. CPU temperature hovers around 42°C under full load, while being blissfully quiet.

I'll be testing this over the next couple of days and see how it goes. If it doesn't perform adequately, I'll get the Noctua.

If this original cooler is Spire WhisperRock or FalconRock, they are with 80x80x25 mm fans at cca 2500 rpm IIRC. So you can use similar, but quieter fan even from Noctua. I think it's capable of cooling the XP 2100+.

I think it's a Spire FalconRock. And yeah, the original fan was 80mm as well.

When I was mounting the DeepCool fan onto that heatsink, I reused the Spire screws, and it fit perfectly. 😀

Falcon has copper core, Whisper is pure aluminum, but both are good for their purposes. I have WhisperRock too, with original fan (curiously, his frame is from some alloy, not plastic as usual) on Barton 2500+, only slowed via Primecooler PC-AFSC1.
