Having watched "Bits und Bolts" video testing the impact USB has on various retro CPU https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nq11CbljGG0&l … IaM09vZC4jsctM9 , I made the offer of doing my own tests. End results confirmed what was shown - but the difference in behaviour between my particular boards (Intel SE440BX-2 /with YMF740C and final BIOS) and Via 694X (Jetway 994AN-L also with final BIOS) proved that it is not just the chipset but the board itself.
Unfortunately I wasn't able to run the Celeron 333 on the 440BX due to the contact B21 mod, and it being unstable as a result. Tests were all run under MSDOS 8.0 (Windows Me boot floppy):
