So I have an Asrock 775i65G rev 2.12 motherboard, with 2 GB DDR400 RAM, BIOS version 3.0 and Radeon X850 Pro.
With the Core 2 Duo E4600 (2.40 GHz) processor in place, the RAM is autodetected as DDR333. And with this config, 3dmark 2001 SE score is 24.8K and Far Cry has some approx. average FPS in the 90s.

Today I experimented a bit - replaced that CPU with a Core 2 Duo E7500 (2.93 GHz). This one autodetects RAM as DDR400. But the 3dmark 2001 SE score is around 21.5k and Far Cry average FPS drops by around 9 or so.

So I'm a bit confused as to what's going on - as you can guess I'm kind of a noob in this field. It'd be really nice to know why this is happening, and what's the best possible processor I can put in this setup.

You may want to check if the CPU actually runs at 2.93, as it seems the board only supports that FSB as "overclocked", maybe you need to manually select it to make it happen ...? I wouldn't however think that memory would run 400 vs 333 if it didn't change the FSB, but it's worth checking out, maybe with CPU-z if you're not familiar with BIOS settings etc.

An E7500 at 800 FSB would run 2.2 GHz, which would be pretty much in the ballpark of the decrease in scores (though the bigger cache should make up for those 200 MHz)

OK, can't find the rev 2.12 per se, but Asrock doesn't mention any 45nm CPUs in the compatibility list for rev. 2.0 https://www.asrock.com/MB/Intel/775i65G%20R2.0/index.asp#CPU

Does the BIOS detect and recognize the CPU?

I have Rev. 2.03 and it's running e5800.
